Gary Lee Johnson was born in Brookings, South Dakota on Oct. 20, 1946. He passed away at home in Piedmont on Oct. 1, 2020.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carl Johnson, Ramona Allen, and daughter Naomi Johnson.
He is survived by his wife Sheila Johnson of Piedmont, South Dakota, son, Josh Johnson (Tia) of Oceanside, California, and Taylor Johnson of Piedmont, South Dakota. Grandchildren: Dawson, Ellie, Ava, and Jagger Johnson. Siblings: Karla Roberts (Kevin) of Dade City, Florida, Kevin Johnson (Lea) of Long Beach, Mississippi, and Veronica Walker (Robin), Biloxi, Mississippi.
Gary graduated from Volga in 1965. He served in the US Army, and was a veteran of the Vietnam war.
He received his Masters in Psychology and worked as a Readjustment Counselor where he continued to serve his country and fellow veterans.
Gary’s favorite past time was walking his beloved Basset Hound, Roscoe, where he continued to serve others by lending a helping hand, listening, and spreading heartfelt messages unconditionally.
He always made time to stop and shake a veterans hand and thank them for their service.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion Post 311, 101 Pine St. Piedmont, SD 57769, Thursday, Oct. 8, at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, The family is requesting donations to be made to the Vet Center in Rapid City in his honor.
