Girls 14U, PeeWee C place third at state; PeeWee A takes fifth

BOYS JV

The Rangers won a pair of weekend contests to improve their league-best record to 15-1-1-0.

They have outscored their South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association opponents a combined 124-19 this year.

Brookings concludes the regular season hosting Sioux Falls (1) on Friday, Watertown on Saturday and Sioux Center on Sunday.

Friday

 Brookings 5, Brandon Valley 0

BROOKINGS – Kole Kalber’s natural hat trick helped the Rangers put the Ice Cats away.

Jack Merritt and Zach Struck scored in the game’s first 4 minutes. Struck, Kalber and Trenton Pederson picked up assists.

The margin stood at 2-0 until Kalber lit the lamp with 2:43 left in the third. Gavan Stewart was credited with the assist.

Kalber scored again a minute and a half later and completed the hat trick on a power play off a Merritt assist with 12:37 remaining in the game.

Alexei Kuhl made 10 saves for the shutout between the pipes.

Sunday

 Brookings 3, Oahe 1

FORT PIERRE – Kalber added two more goals to cap a big weekend.

He opened the scoring at the 11:12 mark of the second.

Pederson took advantage of a power play with 5 seconds to play in the middle period, finding the back of the net with Jacob Drew picking up the assist.

The Capitals cut the deficit in half with 10:20 to play.

Kalber provided an insurance goal with 47 seconds showing on the clock.

BANTAM A

The Rangers posted a 2-0 weekend and ended up 14-2-1-1 in SDAHA games, placing second in the standings.

The state tournament is Friday through Sunday in Huron.

Rushmore took the regular-season crown with a 17-1 mark.

Saturday

 Brookings 9, Oahe 2

BROOKINGS – Cooper Deatherage scored four goals.

Ren Jacobsen logged four assists to go with one goal.

Jay Harris scored twice.

Jacob Kahle (two assists) and Tre Christopherson also lit the lamp.

Adding assists were Riley Linstad (two), Aidan Austreim (two), Carson Odde and Talon Hyde.

Brookings led 4-1 after a period and 8-2 through two.

Goalie Egan Jensen made 11 saves.

Sunday

 Brookings 4, Oahe 0

FORT PIERRE – Jensen notched 18 saves for the shutout and the Rangers got off to another fast start.

Kahle sandwiched goals around a Harris power-play tally in the opening period. Austreim assisted on the first score, and Kahle and Jacobsen on the middle goal.

Linstad found the back of the net in the third.

BANTAM B

FORT PIERRE – The Rangers closed the regular season strong, beating the Capitals at the Expo Center.

Waylon Carroll scored two goals.

Masen Holen and Jack Lee added goals.

Koen Beinhorn dished out a pair of assists and Andrew Hahn added one.

Ryder Anderson notched 20 saves for the shutout between the pipes.

The Rangers ended up 3-8-1-2 in league games. The state tournament is this weekend in Rapid City.

GIRLS 14U

MITCHELL – The third-seeded Rangers matched that finish in the state tournament over the weekend at the Toshiba Center.

No. 2 Sioux Falls bested No. 1 Mitchell by a 6-4 margin in the championship game.

Friday – Quarterfinals

 Brookings 4, Sioux Center 1

Anna Rasmussen’s hat trick lifted the Rangers over the Tornadoes.

She scored on an assist from Taryn Richter in the first.

Peyton Triple added a goal – assist by Payton Triplett – in the second and Rasmussen scored again.

Rasmussen completed the hat trick with 5:54 remaining in the game.

Rorii Quam made 10 saves.

Saturday – Semifinals

 Sioux Falls 5, Brookings 4, OT

Adrianna Clark lit the lamp – her fourth goal of the game – on Juliana Chan’s assist 91 seconds into the extra period.

Brookings led 1-0 after a period and 3-2 through three.

Richter scored two goals. Ava Kahle and Rasmussen added goals.

Miyah Foerster dished out an assist.

Quam stopped five shots.

Sunday – Third Place

 Brookings 4, Aberdeen 1

The Rangers scored three times in the first 7 minutes to take control.

Richter (two assists), Rasmussen (assist), Foerster and Triplett each lit the lamp for Brookings.

Kahle logged a pair of assists.

Quam made 10 saves to earn the win between the pipes.

PEEWEE A

BROOKINGS – The seventh-seeded Rangers placed fifth in the state tourney over the weekend at Larson Ice Center.

No. 1 Sioux Falls (2) beat No. 2 Rushmore 5-4 in the final.

Friday – Quarterfinals

 Rushmore 7, Brookings 2

Bryce Heflin scored in the second and third periods.

Saturday – Consolation Semifinals

 Brookings 3, Aberdeen 2, 2OT

Heflin netted a hat trick, including the game-winner 3 minutes into the second overtime.

Both teams scored twice in the third period.

Parker Nielsen had two assists and Thor Kahler one.

Matthe Bothe made 17 saves in goal.

Sunday – Fifth Place

 Brookings 6, Brandon Valley 2

Heflin capped a standout weekend with four more goals and an assist.

Tied at 1-1 after a period, the Rangers led 3-2 heading to the third.

Nielsen (assist) and Cade Zweber added tallies.

Bothe logged 15 saves.

PEEWEE C

ABERDEEN – The third-seeded Rangers placed third in the state tourney Friday through Sunday at Odde Ice Center.

No. 2 Aberdeen beat No. 1 Brandon Valley 7-2 in the final.

Weston Baker notched a hat trick to lead the charger.

Mauer Bartley had two goals and Tryston Hostler one.

Gavin Loy tallied a pair of assists. Hostler, Ashton Baker, Emerson Cramer and Chasen Kastner added assists.

Neil Trygstad had 13 saves for the win in goal.

Saturday – Semifinals

 Aberdeen 3, Brookings 1

The Cougars broke open a tie game with two goals in the middle period.

Weston Baker lit the lamp on a Cramer assist in the first stanza.

Trygstad stopped 23 shots.

Sunday – Third Place

 Brookings 4, Watertown 3, OT

Bartley capped a solid season for the Rangers, scoring 8:10 into overtime off of Ashton Baker’s helper to seal the victory.

Bartley ended up with two goals, as Ashton Baker and Hostler added one apiece.

Loy and Cramer had assists.

Trygstad recorded 19 saves.

SQUIRT A

FARGO, N.D. – The Rangers wrapped up the year at the Squirt International Tournament over the weekend, winning three of their five games to place seventh out of 66 teams.

Brookings won the SDAHA regular-season crown this season, going 20-0 while outscoring its opponents a combined 187-13.

Friday

 Brookings 7, Woodbury Royal 1

The Rangers scored all seven of their goals in the first period – led by Jack Lovseth, who found the back of the net four times while adding an assist.

Colt VanMaanen (assist), Un Hyeng Keay (assist) and Ethan Foerster also scored.

Maxx Anderson dished out a pair of assists, with Tegan Jensen, Colin Jacobson and Cannon Friedrich chipping in with one apiece.

Goalie Jon Drew earned the win between the pipes.

 Brookings 6, Cottage Grove Wolfpack 1

Lovseth found the back of the net twice and added an assist.

Weston Diers, Foerster and Jensen each had a goal and a helper.

VanMaanen also scored.

Anderson, Keay, Diers, Carter Nielsen and Beau Luvaas each contributed an assist.

Drew logged 11 saves.

Saturday

 Brookings 5, Edina Hornets 2

Lovseth and Diers both had two goals and Nielsen added one to go with an assist.

VanMaanen and Jacobson added assists.

Drew stopped 13 shots.

 Grafton Park River North Stars 5, Brookings 4

Jensen, Jacobson, Nielsen and Lovseth scored for Brookings.

The score was tied 2-2 after a period and 4-all through two.

Anderson handed out a pair of assists, with Jacobson and Friedrich both adding one.

Sunday

 Des Moines Jr. Bucs Red 4, Brookings 1

The Iowa club topped the Rangers to conclude the tourney.

Diers found the back of the net on Lovseth’s assist in the third period.
