Girls hockey: Brookings Rangers win big over Mitchell, Watertown

The Brookings Rangers girls’ varsity hockey team went 2-0 over the weekend. The Rangers beat. Mitchell, 6-3, at home on Friday and then beat Watertown, 11-2, Saturday on the road.

Brookings is now 5-0 on the season and will play at Aberdeen on Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.

Friday

BROOKINGS – The Rangers fell behind 2-0 but were then able to outscore the Marlins 6-1 the rest of the way.

Mitchell scored the lone goal of the first period with 5:49 left in the first. The Marlins then went up 2-0 eight seconds into the second period.

Brookings then got on the board with 11:37 left in the second. Savannah Barber scored an even strength goal and it was assisted by Kiran Vugteveen. Vugteveen then scored a goal of her own 1:45 later and Barber had the assist on that goal that made it 2-2 heading into third.

It was then an onslaught of goals for the Rangers in the third. Kinzey Grendler scored the first goal 6:48 into the period and that goal was assisted by Vugteveen and Barber. Grendler scored again just over two minutes later to make it 4-2 and that goal was assisted by Briella Van Dusseldorp.

Vugteveen would net her second goal of the game with 9:33 remaining as Barber set her up. Mitchell cut the lead to 5-3 with nine minutes left, but Barber scored her second of the game with 4:18 remaining and that put the game out of reach.

Brookings outshot Mitchell 34-21. Roari Quam was in net for Brookings and she had 18 saves.

Saturday

WATERTOWN – It was all Rangers in their second game of the weekend. Brookings had a whopping 54 shots on the Lakers, including a 38-5 advantage in the final two periods where the Rangers outscored the Lakers 7-0.

Watertown scored the first goal of the game 5:40 into the contest. The Rangers then tied the game with 6:34 left in the first period when Sawyer Triplett scored, and Maggie Dunbar assisted on the goal.

The Rangers then took the lead on a goal from Anna Rasmussen 10 seconds later. Julissa Peterson and Triplett assisted on that goal. The Lakers then tied the game 13 seconds later. Brookings would add two goals before the end of the period in an 11 second span. Barber scored the first goal at the 5:40 mark and Taylor Hokenson and Vugteveen assisted. Hokenson then scored 11 seconds later and Vugteveen and Barber set her up.

That’s when the flood gates opened as the Rangers scored five goals in the second period. Hokenson scored her second goal of the game 2:21 into the second and Vugteveen assisted on it. Miyah Foerster scored just under four minutes later as she scored on a set-up from Triplett and Peterson. Hokenson then completed the hat trick two minutes later as she was set up by Vugteveen and Barber. Taryn Richter and Triplett scored the final two goals of the period. Foerster, Van Dusseldorp and Anna Rasmussen had assists.

Brookings scored two more goals before the game ended. Barber scored her second of the game 15 seconds into the third and Vugteveen and Jayda Garaets assisted. Graciana Peterson scored the final goal for the Rangers and Dunbar had an assist.

Aletha Baker was the goalie for the Rangers, and she had 12 saves.
