Governors topple Bobcats in dual

Sean Welsh/Register: Brookings’ Luke Rasmussen works on Pierre’s Maguire Raske during his 4-2 decision at 182 pounds in an Eastern South Dakota Conerence dual Tuesday at the BHS Auxiliary Gymnasium.

BROOKINGS – No. 1 Pierre defeated the Bobcats 69-9 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference wrestling dual Tuesday night at the BHS Auxiliary Gymnasium.

The Governors won five of the seven contested matches, including four by fall.

Brookings had seven open weight classes.

Luke Rasmussen (182 pounds) and Gus Miller (285) picked up victories for the home team.

Rasmussen defeated Maguire Raske 4-2.

The sophomore used a first-period takedown to grab a 2-0 lead and then road Raske the entire second period.

Raske earned a pair of back points with 47 seconds remaining; however, Rasmussen’s reversal soon thereafter sealed the victory.

Rasmussen is now 10-0 on the season.

Miller built a 4-1 lead before pinning Preston Taylor with 7 seconds remaining in Period 2.

The defending state champion at 220 is 2-0 this year after missing the start of the season with a hand injury

Pierre’s Blake Johnson pinned Nolan Miles in 1:15 in the 106-pound weight class to open the dual.

Tyson Johnson’s takedown of Tyson Brandt 22.2 seconds into overtime led to a 6-4 victory at 138.

Cade Hinkle (145) won by fall in 1:36 versus Koby Bartels, Jack Van Camp (152) stuck Jaxon Bowes in 1:09 and Regan Bollweg (195) dropped James Olson in 3:57.

“Pierre is Pierre, and they come in with a lot of really good kids,” said BHS coach Scott Miller. “We’re in a position where we’re a year to two years under every single one of their guys and, you know, we spotted them seven forfeits. I think, as a whole, the kids wrestled well.

“At 195, James Olson wrestled really well. He got a little bit too aggressive and gave up a couple takedowns.

“Tyson at 138 – we stay in good position, we win that match. We kind of took a good shot there in overtime and we got our hips too far inside – we should have just finished it, drove through and it would have been great.

“Great match at 182. We knew they might take Maguire Raske and move him up – they did. The nice thing about Luke, he was in control of the match the whole way and then we gave up two back points to tie it up. And we were able to come out on top, so that was awesome.

“You know, personally, as a dad, I’m looking at heavyweight. That was a big match there.

“So coming out on top at 182 and heavyweight, that’s a win. We could’ve got another one at 138. But we’re young and our upside is a lot better than some of their kids. They’re wrestling at the end of the season; we’re still getting better.”

The Governors moved to 3-0 (3-0 ESD).

Brookings (0-4, 0-3) competes in the West Sioux (Iowa) Invitational on Saturday.
