Grevlos leads SDGA Men’s Amateur

BROOKINGS – Sioux Falls’ Will Grevlos carded a 3-under-par 69 to grab the lead following the first round of the SDGA Men’s Amateur Championship on Friday at Brookings Country Club.

The sophomore at Minnesota birdied Nos. 4 and 6 on the front for a 2-under 34. He made a birdie at the 12th and a bogey at the 13th, before sandwiching birds at Nos. 16 and 18 around a bogey on No. 17.

Mitchell’s Brandon Sigmund, the 2012 champ, and Watertown’s Sam Batta are tied for second at 2-under 70.

Sigmund offset two bogeys with two birdies on the front. He birdied Nos. 11 and 14 on the inward nine.

Batta, a sophomore at South Dakota State, came out hot with birds on Nos. 1, 2, 5 and 6 for a 32 on the front. He made a double-bogey 6 on No. 10, but bounced back with a birdie at the 11th and an eagle 3 on No. 14 to get to 5-under. Batta made a bogey at the 17th and a double-bogey 7 at the 18th.

Sioux Falls’ Jacob Otta, a senior at SDSU, and Parkston’s Jacob Lee are another shot back in a tie for fourth following rounds of 1-under 71.

Otta made two birdies and two bogeys on the front. He bogeyed No. 13 before birdieing the 15th and 18th.

Lee dropped in five birds on his outward nine en route to a 33. He made two more birdies on the back but had four bogeys for a 38.

Mitchell’s Russell Pick and Aberdeen’s Jonah Dohrer shot even-par 72 and are tied for sixth.

Pick finished with a flurry, sandwiching birdies at Nos. 16 and 18 around a hole-in-one at the par-3 17th. He shot 39 on the front.

Dohrer, a Jackrabbit sophomore, shot 37-35 and made four birdies.

Sioux Falls’ Bryce Hammer and Jack Lundin and Rapid City’s Nick Lust are tied for eighth at 73.

Scott Holm led the BCC contingent in Round 1, carding a 75. He’s tied for 16th.

Holm made a bird 2 at the seventh and a birdie 4 at the 14th while carding nine-hole scores of 36 and 39.

Jake Steen (76) and Brodie Hullinger (76) are tied for 22nd, Ian Vizina (78) is tied for 37th, Chris Brozik (79) is tied for 41st, Justin Sell (81) is tied for 56th, Matt Krogman (83) and Kayde Bartels (83) are tied for 64th, and Brian Berkenhoff (84) is tied for 67th.

SDSU freshman Lucas Schaefbauer (74), who is from Aberdeen, and Matthew Schaefer (76), of Fordyce, Nebraska, are tied for 11th and tied for 22nd, respectively.

The second round is today and the tourney concludes with the third round Sunday.

Katie Bartlett of Pierre and Lani Potter, who is from Boulder City, Nevada, are tied for the lead after the first round of the SDGA Women’s Amateur Championship on Friday at Brookings Country Club.

They both shot 3-over-par 75.

Bartlett, a senior at South Dakota, shot 36 on the back (opening nine) and 39 on the front. She won the Two-Woman with Julia Hall last week and was runner-up in the Match Play earlier this summer.

Bartlett placed third in the Amateur a year ago.

Potter, a sophomore at South Dakota State, also shot 36-39.

Sioux Falls’ Julia Jansa (77) and Aberdeen’s Sydney Wirebaugh (78), a sophomore at SDSU, sit in third and fourth, respectively. Jansa was runner-up last season.

Sioux Falls’ Maggie Murphy and Tea’s McKayla Poppens are tied for fifth at 80.

Murphy, an assistant coach for the Jackrabbits, carded a 43 on the back nine before closing with a 37.

Murphy won the Amateur in 2007 and is a three-time SDGA champion. She prevailed in the Match Play earlier this summer.

Parkston native and SDSU senior Sydney Borman is tied for seventh with Sioux Falls’ Jenna Sutcliffe, an incoming freshman for the Jackrabbits, and Reese Jansa at 82.

Sioux Falls’ Shannon McCormick and Rapid City’s Alex Kandolin, another frosh for SDSU, rounded out the top 10 following rounds of 83.

Kelly Evans-Hullinger, the lone BCC member in the field, shot 85 and is tied for 13th.

The second round is today and the tourney concludes with the third round Sunday.
