Hammer, Toscano take SDGA Match Play crowns

SIOUX FALLS – Bryce Hammer defeated Ryan Jansa 2-and-1 in the final of the SDGA Men’s Match Play Championship on Sunday afternoon at Willow Run.

Jansa, Ryan Trasamar and Hammer – all of Sioux Falls – shared medalist honors with 2-under-par 68s Thursday and were the Nos. 1-3 seeds. Jon Emerson, also of Sioux Falls, shot 69 and was No. 4.

Brookings’ Brodie Hullinger (69) was the No. 5 seed and Jake Steen (74) was the No. 38.

It marked the first career SDGA title for Hammer.

Hammer defeated No. 6 Jacob Otta and No. 30 Ryan Neff by 2-and-1 margins in the first two rounds Friday. He dropped No. 51 Russell Pick 2-and-1 in the Round of 16 and Jonah Swartz 6-and-5 in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Hammer beat No. 7 Ben Daane 5-and-4 in the semifinals Sunday morning.

It marked Jansa’s 14th runner-up finish in an SDGA event. He’s claimed a record 28 titles, including nine majors [seven Amateur, two Match Play 1993 and 1995)].

Jansa dropped No. 64 Kevin Kolb 2-and-1 in the first round and No. 32 Tyler Westra 1-up in the second round Friday. He beat No. 49 Matt Tolan and No. 25 Brandon Sigmund 1-up in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals Saturday.

Jansa toppled No. 29 Jonah Dohrer 4-and-3 in the semis Sunday morning.

Steen was a 2-and-1 victor over No. 27 William Sanford in the first round and a 6-and-5 winner versus No. 59 Lucas Schaefbauer in the second round. He fell 3-and-2 to Swartz in Saturday morning’s Round of 16.

Hullinger upended No. 60 John Vining 2-and-1 in the first round but dropped a 2-and-1 match to No. 37 Hank Eggebraaten in the second.

Women

South Dakota State senior and Huelva, Spain, native Teresa Toscano won the SDGA Women’s Match Play Championship at Willow Run.

She shot 4-over-par 75 in Thursday’s qualifying round and earned the No. 2 seed.

After receiving a first-round bye, Toscano dropped No. 15 Liz Duncan 4-and-2 Friday afternoon.

On Saturday, she dropped No. 10 Alex Kandolin in the quarterfinals and No. 6 Natalie Young 2-and-1 in the semifinals.

Toscano defeated No. 5 Kali Trautman, a Clear Lake native, 2-and-1 in the final Sunday morning.

Maggie Murphy, an assistant coach for the Jackrabbits from Sioux Falls, shot 1-over 72 and was medalist. She fell in 19 holes to No. 17 Lani Potter in the second round after a first-round bye.
