BROOKINGS – Organist Gregory Hand will perform the inaugural concert on the Founder’s Recital Hall pipe organ in the Brookings Chamber Music Society’s last concert of the season at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Hand is the professor of organ for the University of Iowa and previously held the position of University Chapel Organist at Northwestern University.
Hand was recently appointed to a five-year term on the jury of the Internationale Orgelwoche Nürnberg. He has given recitals and master classes in the United States, France, Spain, Germany and Brazil. He has participated in several international organ competitions, including the Grand Prix de Chartres and Prix Andre Marchal in France, at St. Albans in England and the Dublin International Organ Competition.
Hand will perform some of the greatest repertoire written for the organ, giving this magnificent instrument installation a fitting welcome to Brookings. Included on the program is Widor’s “Symphonie pour orgue, op. 42”; “Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565,” attributed to Bach; Samuel Wesley’s “Choral Song and Fugue” and Charles Ives’ Variations on “America.”
The Founders Recital Hall pipe organ was originally built by the Reuter Organ Company in 1962 as its Opus 1361 and installed at the Colorado Women’s College in Denver. When the campus was sold to Johnson and Wales University, the decision was made to gift the organ to SDSU for installation in the Performing Arts Center.
