Harvey: Brookings area benefits from proven leadership

Letter to the editor

Soon, Brookings area residents will have the opportunity to select our representation in Pierre for future legislative sessions. Every year there are issues that arise in state legislative proposals that directly a the citizens of Brookings. Consequently, strong voices are needed to articulate our positions.

For example, over the last two years, various legislative proposals took aim at denying Brookings Municipal Utilities’ rights to grow its service area to serve new areas annexed by the city.

They were proposals that would have severely hampered future growth and improvement of our area. These proposals were unsuccessful thanks to hard work and a strong voice from Rep. Tim Reed.

Rep. Reed knew how important municipal utilities’ right to grow was for Brookings (and of municipal utility cities in our area), and how the growth of our municipal utility supports attraction of new business that benefits the entire area. Representative Reed’s experience is deep, having served Brookings area for 13 years with eight of those years as the mayor of Brookings.

Another strong voice for our area is Larry Tidemann. During his previous service in the state Legislature, Larry served on the Appropriations Committee and the Government Operations and Audit Committee, among others. Larry has demonstrated his support for our area over his previous years of service and will, again, provide trusted leadership in the House.

We need strong leadership to represent our interests and to do what is best for the State of South Dakota. Tim Reed and Larry Tidemann are proven leaders with respected voices for our area. Please join me in casting votes for Tim and Larry. Thank you.
