Brookings plans parade, Uncle Sam Jam

BROOKINGS – Brookings event planners are getting ready for some family-friendly Fourth of July fun in the city.

Brookings’ Fourth of July parade will uphold tradition and offer classic parade highlights on Tuesday, according to Cami Powers with Brookings Radio, which is sponsoring the parade.

“It’ll start at 11 a.m. We’re gonna start line-up at 9 a.m. That will be at the corner of Third and Third by the Police Department,” she said.

She’s expecting 70-80 entries, which is around the same as last year.

The route will be the same. Starting at the Police Department, the parade entries will go down Third to Medary to Sixth to Main and back to Third.

“The Fire Department will be there,” Powers said.

The parade usually has a lot of tractors, trucks, cars and people walking, she added.

“I’m guessing there’ll be some candy,” Powers said.

After an afternoon break, families can enjoy some more free fun at the 16th annual Uncle Sam Jam at the Swiftel Center.

The action starts at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Activities include balloon twisting, face painting, inflatables, a petting zoo, train rides for kids, crafts, a sand box, photo booth, all from 5-9 p.m.; princess meet and greets from 5-8 p.m.; the Great Plains Zoomobile from 6-8 p.m.; and live music from The Rude Band starting at 7 p.m. Prizes, including gift certificates, coupons, tickets and T-shirts, will also be given away at the event.

The big finale, the fireworks display, starts at approximately 10:15 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public, and free-will donations will be accepted.
