Hawks, Dolphins win Region 2B titles

BROOKINGS – Kade Groos and Mason Hemmer led the Colman-Egan boys to the team title, while Courtni Frank and Caitlyn Christianson helped lift Deubrook Area to the girls’ championship at the Region 2B Golf Tournament on a rainy Tuesday at Edgebrook.

The Class B State Boys’ Golf Tournament is June 5-6 at Spring Creek in Harrisburg. The Class B State Girls’ Golf Tournament is June 5-6 at Prairie Green in Sioux Falls.

Boys

Groos (41-36) defeated Hemmer (39-38) in a one-hole playoff for medalist honors after both players fired 7-over-par 77 in regulation.

Arlington/Lake Preston’s Haydn Gilbertson took third at 78. Teammate Scott Sampson (84) placed fourth and Deubrook Area’s Nick Olson (87) finished fifth.

The Hawks posted a team score of 243 and the Badgers were second at 257, as both teams automatically qualified for the state tourney.

The Dolphins (272) finished third and Howard (274) was fourth, but both teams qualified three individuals so they will factor into the team standings at state.

Howard’s Noah Hodges (87) and Chester Area’s Cole Pry (88) were sixth and seventh, respectively.

Rounding out Colman-Egan’s team tally, Bodee Groos shot 89 to place eighth.

James Valley Christian’s Carter Wells (89) took ninth. Flandreau’s Dawson Blum qualified for state by taking 10th with a 90.

Trey Ramstad completed ALP’s team score with a 95, putting him in 17th.

The top 18 individuals qualified for state. Other area qualifiers were Deubrook’s Jack Bandemer (91) and Nash Colberg (94), who finished 11th and 16th, respectively, and Elkton-Lake Benton’s Calub Wiskur (96), who took 18th.

Girls

The Dolphins shot 272 to easily outdistance the second-place Tigers (298).

The Fliers carded a 323 to take third, but qualified three individuals.

Frank was medalist following a round of 87.

Christianson was runner-up with a 90.

Howard’s Jordan Glanzer (93) ended up third.

Maci Colberg completed Deubrook’s team total with a 95, as she placed fourth.

Grace Johanson paced Flandreau with a 97, putting her in fifth.

Howard’s Maddie Palmquist and Deubrook’s Mattie Nepodal also shot 97 as they were sixth and seventh, respectively.

De Smet’s Kennedy Ruml (103), Wessington Springs’ Jaycee Hohn (103) and JVC’s AbbyRose Miller (105) rounded out the top 10.

The top 15 individuals qualified for state.

Also advancing for the Fliers were Keva Burshiem (109), who took 12th, and Alina Cloud (117), who finished 13th.

The Dolphins are the three-time defending state champions, while also adding a title in 2011 and second-place finishes in 2010 and 2013. Christianson, now a senior, was the individual runner-up at state a year ago.
