BROOKINGS – Daktronics has partnered with Brookings Economic Development Corporation to host the 2018 Brookings Area Idea Competition judging and open house reception as part of its year-long 50th anniversary celebration.
The public reception will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Daktronics Building 6, at 201 Daktronics Drive.
There are more than 40 entries for this year’s competition, according to Jennifer Quail, BEDC director of entrepreneur support. Participants submitted a one-page description, and the finalists will pitch their product or business idea before a three-person panel of judges.
“There are many incredible, innovative ideas submitted, and we are looking forward to working with the winners on taking these ideas to the next level of development,” Quail said. “A total of $2,500 in prize money will be awarded to winners once they reach established milestones.”
As one of the most well-known entrepreneurial businesses in the state, Daktronics was the perfect fit to host this year’s competition, organizers say.
“We wanted to celebrate an existing business success story while at the same time encouraging the next big idea,” Quail said.
The company, which got its start in a small garage in Brookings, hopes that programs like BEDC’s Idea Competition keep encouraging the entrepreneurial mindset.
“For a community our size, we are fortunate to have tremendous assets for entrepreneurs,” said Reece Kurtenbach, president and CEO of Daktronics.
“We see SDSU students as well as the community at large taking advantage of these opportunities and believe this type of activity is instrumental in continuing the growth and momentum taking place in Brookings,” Kurtenbach added.
Brookings residents are invited to come to the Wednesday reception to meet the Idea Competition participants.
“We encourage community members to network with and support these creative individuals – you never know who the next Daktronics will be,” Quail said.
