REDFIELD — The Sioux Valley Cossacks split their two games in the SDHSBA playoffs on Sunday afternoon, picking up a 9-4 win over Groton Area in the first round but falling to Redfield Area 10-0 in the second round.

• Sioux Valley 9, Groton Area 4

The Cossacks got off to a fast start scoring five runs in the first inning before scoring four runs in the sixth to defeat the Tigers in a first-round matchup.

After taking a 5-0 in the top of the first inning, Groton Area mounted its comeback with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The Tigers cut the lead down to 5-4 on an RBI single from Bradin Althoff and an RBI double from Tate Larson in the bottom of the fifth inning but Jack Optiz delivered a two-run single in the sixth to break the game open.

The Cossacks added two more runs in the inning when Christopher Moberg was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Levi Loban scored on a ground out.

• Redfield Area 10, Sioux Valley 0

The Cossacks’ reward for pulling off the upset earlier in the day was a matchup with the second-seeded Muskrats. Both teams exchanged scoreless innings until the bottom of the fourth when Elijah Morrissette delivered a two-run single to put Redfield Area on the board.

The Muskrats added to their lead on a two-run double from Elliot Komraus and scored another run on an error by Loban to make it a 5-0 game and Redfield Area plated five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put Sioux Valley away.

Loban went 2-for-3 at the plate while Braden Danzeisen went 3-for-3 with a double. Opitz and Kyler Bezdichek each had a single in the loss.

Moberg allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings before Opitz allowed eight runs (seven earned) on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts over the final 1.2 innings.
