High school boys basketball: Slow start leads to tough loss for Bobcats

SIOUX FALLS – The Brookings Bobcats got off to a cold start as a big first quarter helped Sioux Falls Washington pick up a 68-33 victory on Tuesday night.

The Warriors landed their big blow in the first quarter as they out-scored the Bobcats 22-3 in the first quarter. Brookings had trouble shooting throughout the first half as they shot just over 12 percent from the floor and were held to 22 percent for the game.

With the Warriors shooting 59.3 percent in the first half and 54 percent for the game, they took a 38-14 lead into halftime. The Bobcats played to a 9-9 draw in the third quarter and dropped the fourth quarter by a score of 21-10. They were also out-rebounded 39-22 but were able to force the Warriors into 17 turnovers on the night.

Ryan Bauman led Brookings with eight points on the night while Austin Clark had six points and six rebounds. Nathan Lease also had six points and seven rebounds while Jackson Hoffman had five points in the loss.

The Warriors had three players score in double figures led by Zaharic Sheppard’s 13 points and six rebounds. Cole Peterson had 12 points and five assists while A.J. Akot had 10 points and five rebounds.

The Bobcats fell to 1-11 on the season and will travel to Sioux Falls Lincoln on Friday night.
