High school cross-country: Brookings Bobcats boys finish first at Clyde Cotton Invitational

HURON — The Brookings Bobcats and Flandreau Fliers competed at the Clyde Cotton Huron Invitational at the Broadlands Creek Country Club on Saturday afternoon with the Bobcats taking first place in the boys’ race.

The Bobcats finished in first in the boys’ race with a total of 90 points, beating out Sioux Falls Washington (96 points) and Brandon Valley (98 points) to take home the title.

Ernest Ting paced Brookings with a time of 16:34.42 to finish in eighth place and the trio of Jonathan Kahler (17:08.79), Jacob York (17:10.54) and Trevin Lounsbury (17:12.72) finished 20th, 21st and 22nd to help boost the Bobcats’ score.

With Igen Nayawanda finishing 28th with a time of 17:29.58 the Bobcats also had strong performances from Shane Harming, who finished 47th with a time of 18:10.73 and Nathan Smith, who finished 70th with a time of 18:46.14.

Brookings had just two runners in the girls’ race as Addie Smetana placed 20th with a time of 20:14.54 and Lily Murray finished 37th with a time of 21:33.06.

Flandreau

Flandreau finished fifth in the girls’ race as their total of 133 points was behind first-place Brandon Valley (25 points), second-place Chamberlain (95 points), third-place Pierre (99 points) and fourth-place Watertown (118 points).

Faith Wiese finished second for the Fliers with a time of 18:24.49 while Diamond Roy finished 33rd with a time of 21:22.60. Kiley Westberry finished 35th with a time of 21:25.04 and Josie Hamilton finished 36th with a time of 21:29.54.

Nora Hamilton finished 60th for the Fliers with a time of 22:50.43 and Morgan Sheppard finished 63rd with a time of 23:03.75.

The Fliers finished 11th in the boys race with a team total of 307 points. Brenton Westberry was the top finisher for Flandreau, placing 56th with a time of 18:29.73.

Tanner Reed finished 61st with a time of 18:34.51, Matthew Gassman finished 77th with a time of 19:39.50, Sam Schmidt finished 78th with a time of 19:39.56, Nathaniel Hobbie finished 79th with a time of 19:44.35, Wyatt Kontz finished 80th with a time of 19:45.50 and Mason Brushbreaker finished 91st with a time of 20:34.47.
