High school football: Five Cossacks, two Fliers honored as All-BEC selections

Seven area football players were honored by the Big East Conference as All-Conference players. Sioux Valley had five All-Conference selections and Flandreau had two All-Conference players.

The Cossacks won the Big East after going 5-0 in conference play and 8-0 overall. The Cossacks fell to eventual Class 11B state champion Hot Springs in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. Seniors Hudsyn Ruesink and Boden Schiller, juniors Brock Christopherson and Donovan Rose and sophomore Preston Top were all All-Conference selections for the Cossacks. Seniors Chris Hornick, Skylar Trgstad and Austin Siegel were all honorable mentions.

The Fliers finished in fifth place in the Big East. Flandreau went 2-5 in conference play and 3-5 overall. The two All-Conference selections for Flandreau were juniors Ben Ballard and Paul Parsley. Senior Brendan Peterson, junior Karter Headrick and sophomore Emmet Skroch were honorable mentions.

Sioux Valley had the most All-Conference selections in the Big East. Elk Point- Jefferson, who finished second in the conference with a 5-1 record, had four selections. Bridgewater- Emery/Ethan and Parker each had three selections. McCook Central/Montrose, Beresford and Baltic all had two selections. Each team had three honorable mentions.

There are two 9-man teams in the BEC. Chester Area had four selections and Garretson had three selections. Chester beat Garretson in the season. Chester had three honorable mentions and Garretson had one.
