High school girls basketball: Oldham-Ramona/Rutland, Arlington begin season

Two area girls basketball teams opened up their seasons on Tuesday night as Oldham-Ramona/Rutland took down Great Plains Lutheran and Arlington fell to Howard.

• Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 50, Great Plains Lutheran 39

WATERTOWN – A solid first quarter led to the win for the Raiders. They outscored the Panthers 20-10 in the first frame and that lead held for the entire game.

The two teams each scored seven points in the second quarter. ORR then extended its lead to 39-23 by the end of the third. The Raiders were outscored 16-11 in the final frame but that wasn’t enough for the Panthers.

Julia Trystad led ORR with 14 points. Alivia Bickett had 12 points and Paige Hanson and Brooklyn Hageman each had seven points.

GPL’s Kate Holmen, Abby Kjenstad and Olivia Holmen all had eight points to lead the Panthers. Madeline Prahl had six points.

ORR hosts Iroquois/Lake Preston on Thursday in Rutland.

• Howard 65, Arlington 45

HOWARD – The Tigers led 13-12 after one quarter and then took a 33-28 lead into the locker room. Then the Tigers blew the game open as they outscored the Cardinals 19-10 in the third and were up 52-38 heading into the fourth. Howard then cruised to the victory as it outscored Arlington 13-7 in the final frame.

Arlington shot 28.1% from the field and was 11-34 from three. The Cardinals were led by Addalyn Steffenson who had 13 points. Jolyssa Steffenson had 10 points. Harley Johnson had eight points.

Howard shot 37.5% from the field and was 4-14 from three. Abby Aslesen had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Kate Connor had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Tigers.

The Tigers outrebounded the Cardinals 38-23. Howard was 23-34 at the free throw line and Arlington was 2-4 at the line.

The Cardinals play Colman-Egan in Colman on Friday at 6 p.m.
