Hirrschoff’s no-hitter leads Bombers Maroon to victory

BROOKINGS – Bombers Maroon kicked off pool play in the Cubby’s Classic at Erv Huether Field Friday. Brookings fell to Sioux Falls West in the first game, but bounced back with a blow-out, no-hit win over Canton.

The Bombers got behind early and were unable to get back in the game.

Sioux Falls West jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs, Jaxton Deltaan and Brock Ades had back-to-back singles to load the bases up. Kaden Kirchner scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0.

Noah Verdoorn then hit an RBI single that scored Deltaan. Ades scored on an error and Grant Prouty scored on a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second inning and Sioux Falls West added to their lead in the third. Ades reached on a lead-off walk and advanced to third base on a two out single by Tyler Olson. Ades and Olson then scored when Baron Martin hit a ground ball and reached on an error to make it 6-0.

Brookings finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Nolan Miles led off and got on first base after a catchers interference call. With one out, Addison Ronning hit an RBI single to score Miles and Will Bauer hit Ronning home with a double to make it 6-2.

Sioux Falls West would blow the game open with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Kirchner led off the inning with a single and Deltaan then got on base because of an error. Ades hit a single to load the bases up with one out. 

Kirchner scored on an error and Verdoon hit an RBI single. Ades scored on a fielder’s choice and Neither team would score again. Brookings had runners on first and second with one out in the sixth inning, but Bauer hit into a fielder’s choice and Tate Helmbolt popped out to the first baseman.

Austin Clark pitched three innings for the Bombers. He gave up six runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Miles pitched one inning and gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits with one strike out and one walk. Ronning pitched one shutout inning. The Bombers had four errors as a team.

Ronning and Bauer each went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Clark went 1-for-2. Breck Hirschoff and Friffin Bartles each went 1-for-3.

Breck Hirrschoff pitched a no-hitter as the Bombers dominated Canton.

Brookings scored two runs in the first inning. J Merrit led off the inning with a walk. He would work his way around the bases and score on a passed ball. Hirrschoff got on base with a walk and Ronning hit him home with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Bombers would add five more runs in the second inning. With two outs, Merrit hit a double. Clark would then walk and Hirrschoff picked up his second RBI single of the day, hitting Merrit home. Clark scored on a wild pitch and Hirrschoff scored on an error. David Brink hit a two RBI double that scored Ronning and and Miles to make it 7-0.

Brookings scored two more in the third and one in fourth to make it 10-0 and that would be the final due to the 10-run rule.

Hirrschoff had three strikeouts and two walks in the four hitless innings he pitched. Brookings had three errors during the game.

On the offensive side, Hirrschoff went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Brink also went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Ronning went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Merrit went 2-for-2 and Miles went 1-for-2.
