Hockey: Ranger Roundup — Eight Brookings teams in action

The Brookings Boys Red Squirt team highlighted a winning weekend for the Ranger squads. The Red Squirts won the Dakota Premier Classic that was hosted by Brookings as they went 4-0 on the weekend.

Brookings Boys Junior Varsity, Brookings Boys Bantam A and Brookings Boys Bantam B all went 1-1. The Ranger Girls 14U team won their lone game of the weekend at the Brookings Boys Blue Squirt team went 2-2.

Friday, Nov. 25

• Brookings 18, Mitchell 0

It was all Rangers in the first game of the tournament.

Owen Rounds led Brookings with six goals. Luke Avaas had four goals and Myles Anderson had a hat trick. Jager Jacobsma and Jacob Myhre each had two goals. Brayden Brintnall also had a goal.

Saturday, Nov. 26

• Brookings 8, Fargo 0

The Rangers kept things rolling in the second game.

Luvaas and Rounds each scored two goals to lead the Rangers. Brintnall, Cooper Hyde, Juke Anderson and Ryker Schumacher each had one goal.

 Brookings 6, Elk River (MN) 1

The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals from Oliver Ahmann in the first period. Those goals were assisted by Rounds and Brintnall.

Elk River then cut the lead to 2-1 before Myles Anderson pushed it back to a two-goal lead. The goal was assisted by Branch Otteson.

Brookings would blow the game open with three goals in the third. Rounds scored the first goal of the period and it was assisted by Brintnall. Ahmann then completed the hat trick with a goal that was assisted by Myles Anderson. Rounds then scored his second goal of the game and it was unassisted.

Juke Anderson had 17 saves in the game.

Sunday, Nov. 27

• Brookings 8, New Prague (MN) 3

Brookings scored four goals in the first period and led 4-1 at the end of the period. Luvaas started the scoring and his goal was assisted by Myles Anderson. Myles Anderson then scored three-straight goals to make it 4-1. Two of those goals were assisted by Ahmann and one was unassisted.

The Rangers scored one goal in the second and it was on a Schumacher goal from Myles Anderson. Rounds then got on the board in the third with a goal from Schumacher. Myles Anderson then finished the game with back-to-back goals to give him five for the day. One was unassisted and the other came from Schumacher.

Friday, Nov. 25

• Brookings 5, Pierre 0

A big second period opened the game up for the Rangers and that led to the shutout victory.

Brookings got on the board in the first period with one goal. Talon Hyde broke the scoreless tie 9:55 into the game and it was unassisted to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

The Rangers then scored three goals in the second. Jackson Heller scored the first goal unassisted just under three minutes into the period. Heller then scored another goal just under six minutes later and it was assisted by Tre Christopherson. Jacob Law then made it 4-0 with 8:31 left in the period with an unassisted goal.

Brookings added one more goal in the third. Hyde scored on a power play with 7:27 into the period to make it 5-0. Heller and Christopherson assisted on the goal.

Brookings outshot Pierre 31-13. Egan Jensen made 13 saves in the shutout.

Saturday, Nov. 26

• Brookings 3, Sioux Falls Flyers 3

The Rangers held a 2-0 lead after the first period but were unable to get the victory in their second game of the weekend.

Andrew Hahn scored the first goal for Brookings 7:50 into the first. It was assisted by Masen Holen. Christopherson then scored an unassisted goal with 3:47 left in the period to make it 2-0.

The Flyers then scored the only goal of the second period with 9:09 left in the period.

Brookings would extend its lead to 3-1 with 9:10 left in the game. Hahn scored his second goal and it was an empty netter. The extra attacker then helped the Flyers as they scored two goals in a span of one minute and 17 seconds to tie the game.

Neither team scored in overtime and the game ended in a tie.

Sioux Falls outshot Brookings 24-19. Jensen made 21 saves.

Boys Bantam A

Sunday, Nov. 27

• Brookings 8, Mitchell 0

The Rangers had three shots against them all game and Matthew Bothe made all three of them. Brookings had 35 shots themselves.

The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Maxten Jensen netted the first goal 2:45 into the game on a power play and Isaac Andal assisted on it. Jason Ready then scored a goal an unassisted goal with 5:31 left in the period to make it 2-0.

Brookings then scored four goals in the second period. Ready scored his second goal of the game 1:23 into the period and Parker Nielsen assisted. Jensen then scored 1:30 later on an assist from Nolan Krogman to make it 4-0. Mason Diers scored with 11:33 left in the period and Krogman assisted again. Andal then scored his first of the game with 5:52 left in the period to make it 6-0 and Carson Kludt assisted on that one.

The Rangers would add two more goals before the end of the game. Nielsen scored a power play goal 8:49 into the third and Jensen assisted on it. Connor Buckley then scored with 9:12 left in the game and Cade Zweber assisted on it to make it an 8-0 final.

Saturday Nov. 26

• Sioux Falls Flyers 5, Brookings 2

It was a tough start to the weekend for the Rangers as they fell to the Flyers.

Neither team scored in the first period. Sioux Falls then took the lead 44 seconds into the second. Brookings then evened things up 2:16 later when Ready scored an unassisted goal. The Flyers then scored three-straight goals to take a 4-1 lead into the third.

Sioux Falls would extend its lead to 5-1 with a goal with 10:43 left in the game. Hayden Hansen scored a goal for Brookings with 6:44 left in the game to make the final 5-2.

Sioux Falls outshot Brookings 45-10. Neil Trygstad had 40 saves on the night.

Boys Bantam B

Friday, Nov. 25

• Brandon Valley 5, Brookings 3

Brookings led 3-2 but was then outscored 3-0 in the final two periods.

Brandon Valley got the scoring going 12 seconds into the game with a goal. Brookings would then tie the game with a Weston Baker unassisted goal with 13:06 left in the first. The Ice Cats would then regain the lead two and a half minutes later, but Brookings then tied it with 7:17 left in the period on a goal from Tryston Holster, which was assisted by Weston Baker and Andrew Haufschild. Mauer Bartley then gave the Rangers the lead with just over six minutes left in the period on a goal assisted by Haufschild.

The Ice Cats took a 4-3 lead into the third and then added a power play goal 1:53 into the final period.

Brandon Valley outshot Brookings 26-18. Paxtyn Pottorff had 21 saves.

Saturday, Nov. 26

• Brookings 4, Aberdeen 0

The Rangers bounced back with a shutout win and outshot the Cougars 58-17.

Brookings held a 21-2 advantage in shots in the first period and scored one goal in the first frame. The goal came from Holster and it was assisted by Haufschild.

Weston Baker then scored 10:36 into the second period to make it 2-0 and it was a power play goal. Bartley then pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal with just under eight minutes left in the period. The goal was assisted by Ashton Baker and Joseph Doom.

Ashton Baker then got on the board with a goal that was 4:52 into the third. The goal was assisted by Thatcher Haselhorst.

Porthoff had 17 saves in the shutout.

Girls 14U

Sunday, Nov. 27

• Brookings 3, Sioux Center Tornadoes 2

Ashton Otteson scored the game winning goal with eight minutes to play and gave the Rangers the win in their lone game of the weekend. Brooke Kruse assisted on the goal.

The two teams were tied 1-1 after the first period. Sioux Center scored with 8:14 left in the period and the Rangers tied it with a goal from Brynnlea Peterson seconds later. Each team then scored a goal each in the second to make the score tied heading into the third.

Brookings was outshot 24-13. Avery Dentlinger had 11 saves in the win.

Boys Blue Squirt

Saturday, Nov. 26

• Brookings 8, Mitchell 2

William Dercks and Owen Zwenbahmer each had hat tricks. Kinley Forester and Khaleb Forester each had one goal.

The Rangers scored two goals in the first, four in the second and two in the third. They outshot Mitchell 25-7. Nash Billings had five saves.

 Rushmore 15, Brookings 4

It was a little tougher for the Rangers in the second game. Kinley Forester scored the first goal of the game for Brookings. Spencer Loveseth then scored in the second period.

Max Harris and Zwenbahmer each had a goal in the third period.

Brookings was outshot 31-9.

Sunday, Nov. 27

• Brookings 7, Watertown 3

Brookings bounced back with a win in the third game.

Zwenbahmer had another hat trick and had two goals in the first period and the Rangers’ only goal in the third.

Brodie Bahe and Dercks each had a goal in the first as well. Loveseth and Kinley Forester each had a goal in the second period.

Brookings was outshot by Watertown 16-15. Billings had 13 saves.

 Sioux Falls Orange 8, Brookings 3

Max Harris scored his first goal of the weekend in the first period. The Rangers did not score in the second. Dercks and Zwenbahmer each had a goal in the third period.

The Rangers were outshot 22-16. Billings had 14 saves.
