BROOKINGS – Brookings Police are warning people to lock their doors after a Brookings resident got a nasty surprise in the middle of the night when they woke up to find a burglar in their home.

The break-in was reported at 4:19 a.m. Thursday and occurred in the 700 block of Fifth Street, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

“The resident there was awoken when they heard noises inside the residence and went to check on it and found an individual inside the residence,” Powers said.

“He was looking for items in the residence. She yelled at the male, and he ran out of the residence. There were signs that he had been in there for a little while as other items had been rummaged through,” he said.

“It’s not determined if anything was taken from the residence,” he added.

“There were no signs of forced entry,” Powers said, adding, “Lock your doors.”

Powers said the suspect has been identified but had not been taken into custody as of Thursday morning.

“We weren’t able to locate him immediately after the incident was reported,” he said.

“At this point, it (the break-in) remains under investigation,” Powers said.
