BROOKINGS – An early Thursday morning fire destroyed a mobile home, damaged another and killed pets, but the people living there got out, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire was reported at 4:10 a.m. Thursday at 3250 Western Ave. S. in rural Brookings, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

“It is believed that the fire originated in the living room, but the cause of the fire is unknown at this time,” Sebring said.

“Five occupants were in the mobile home at the time of the fire. Everyone was able to get out, and no one was injured in the fire. Several dogs, cats and a fish perished in the fire,” he added.

The mobile home is a total loss, and a 2002 Pontiac Montana van that was parked near the mobile home received extensive damage. The mobile home directly to the south received extensive damage, as well, Sebring said.

Responding were the Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Ambulance, sheriff’s office and Brookings Police Department.

The fire is under investigation with the Brookings Fire Department and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
