Brookings’ Michaela Jewett headlined the 2018 All-Register Girls’ Basketball Team as the junior was named Player of the Year.

The Bobcats finished with an 11-10 record, including a 10-6 mark in the Eastern South Dakota Conference.

Eighth-seeded Brookings dropped a 49-45 overtime game to ninth-seeded Rapid City Central at home in the Round of 16.

Five players were repeat honorees – Jewett, Deubrook Area senior Cortney Bauman, Sioux Valley senior Carly Granum, Elkton-Lake Benton senior Callie Otkin and Flandreau senior Kathy Parsley.

Sioux Valley senior Lynsey Stevens and Flandreau sophomore Hannah Parsley rounded out the seven-member team of five seniors, one junior and a sophomore.

The Fliers had a solid season, posting a 15-7 mark. They went 7-1 in the Big East Conference while taking second in the regular-season standings and the tournament. Flandreau was 3-3 in a solid Lake Central Conference.

Flandreau topped Sioux Valley 58-41 in the Region 2A semifinals. The No. 12 seed in the Round of 16, the Fliers fell 49-42 to fifth-seeded West Central in Madison.

The Cossacks ended up 13-8 (5-3 BEC, 3-3 LCC). They defeated Deuel 78-43 in the first round of the Region 2A tourney.

The Dolphins recorded a 16-6 record. They took second in the Dakota Valley Conference regular-season standings at 7-1 and beat the Lady Elks 73-43 in the DVC Tournament title game in Elkton.

Deubrook beat Wolsey-Wessington 70-37 in the Region 3B quarterfinals before falling 41-31 to De Smet in the semis in Madison.

ELB (12-9, 5-3 DVC) fell 47-22 to Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in the Region 4B quarterfinals in Huron.

No nominations were received from Arlington, Colman-Egan, Lake Preston or Oldham-Ramona/Rutland.

Cortney Bauman – G

Deubrook Area

5-7, Sr.

Bauman had a solid senior season, averaging 17 points, four rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.8 assists per game.

“Cortney has been an integral part of Dolphin basketball since her first varsity game as a freshman,” said Deubrook head coach Brad DeBeer. “This season, she did a great job of leading by example. Her will to succeed shows through not only by her offensive intensity, but by the tenacity in which she plays defense.

“She could score from the perimeter and by attacking the rim. Cort also proved to be one of the top defenders in the area.

“It has been my pleasure to coach Cortney two different times in her high school career.”

Bauman nished her career with 1,152 points. She averaged 13.3 points, four rebounds and 2.5 steals. She was an All-DVC selection three times and made the first team each of the past two seasons.

Bauman is a repeat All-Register selection.

Carly Granum – G

Sioux Valley

5-7, Sr.

The sharpshooter continued to knock down 3-pointers during her senior season and is on the All-Register team for a second year in a row.

Granum averaged 19.5 points and buried a state-record 122 treys on 240 attempts – 50.8 percent. She made 5.54 3s per game.

“Carly is the best catch-and-shoot shooter in the state,” said Cossacks head coach Jamie Granum. “Teams really have no choice but to face guard her as she needs little space to get her shot off.

“All the 3s are crazy, but to shoot it at over 50 percent facing the defenses she did is unbelievable. That probably says more about her teammates and the screens that were set. A shooting guard is only as good as their point guard and Carly got to play in her career with two really good ones – her sister, Kaylee, and now, Cassie Rawden.

“Basketball is a time-spent sport, and I don’t believe anyone has spent more time on their shooting craft than Carly.”

Granum hit nine 3-pointers in a game three times this season after tying the school record with 10 in a contest as a junior.

Granum broke the Class A record for career 3s with 337 – second in state history, regardless of class, to Mitchell Christian’s Jill Young (467). Young had the previous single-season state record of 105.

Granum’s 1,189 points rank sixth in Sioux Valley history, including second amongst four-year players.

She moved up to the Class A All- State first team this year after landing on the third team in 2017. Granum was a two-time All-BEC first-team and All-LCC pick.

Michaela Jewett – F

Brookings

6-0, Jr.

Jewett is a two-time All-Register selection and this season’s Player of the Year.

She was named to the Class A All-State second team and again made the All-ESD squad.

Callie Otkin – G

Elkton-Lake Benton

5-4, Sr.

Otkin was the Dakota Valley Conference MVP.

She averaged 17.3 points and two steals per game. She shot 81.7 percent from the free-throw line and hit 57 3-pointers.

“Callie is a hard worker on the court, a great team leader and an outstanding role model for her younger teammates,” said ELB head coach Trish Van Dyke.

Otkin set the school record for treys in a game with seven.

She’s a two-time All-Register performer.

Hannah Parsley – G

Flandreau

5-9, So.

Parsley put up season averages of 14.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 steals and three assists per game.

“Hannah does not play like a sophomore and she wasn’t treated like one by opponents, either,” said Flandreau head coach Megan Severtson. “This season, she was often called upon to do a majority of the scoring. She slashes, drives, finishes in traffic; and because of the work she put in during the off- season, she can shoot from the perimeter, too.

“Averaging 3.5 steals per game, she also caused problems for opposing teams defensively. Her work ethic and toughness will make her a player to continue to watch over the next two seasons.”

Parsley shot 49 percent from the field, including 33 percent from downtown.

She posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds in the team’s Round of 16 game.

Parsley was a first-team All-BEC pick after making the second team as a freshman. She is a two-time All-LCC selection.

Kathy Parsley – G

Flandreau

5-9, Sr.

The two-time All-Register honoree wrapped up her career with another solid season.

Parsley put up 10.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.4 steals per contest.

“Kathy has quietly put together one of the best careers in Flandreau girls’ basketball history,” said Severtson. “Coaches she played against will remember her as being a consistent threat on both the defensive and offensive end.

“She has been a leader on our basketball team for a number of years and has set an example for the expectations of our program. I look forward to watching her play at Dakota Wesleyan University and seeing what she does in the future off the court.”

Parsley nished as the Fliers’ career leader in assists with 247. She’s fifth all-time in rebounds (452) and also a top-10 scorer.

Parsley was a three-time All-BEC (first team this year) and All-LCC selection.

Lynsey Stevens – G

Sioux Valley

5-9, Sr.

Stevens put up 16 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.3 steals per game.

She shot 54.8 percent (137-of-250) from the field.

“Lynsey is a dynamic player,” said Granum. “She can pick up a volleyball and be one of the top players in the area; then she picks up a basketball and does the same thing; and she’ll be one of the best jumpers in the state in track and field.

“Her first-step quickness would play in the boys’ game, and her ability to attack the basket really complemented our shooters. In most games, we had her guard other teams’ best players. As her stats show, she affected the game in so many ways. Most of all though, she was willing to do whatever it took for us to have success and that speaks more about her as a person than it does about her basketball ability.”

Stevens dropped in a career-high 33 points in the Region 2A first-round game against Deuel. It ranks as the second-highest single-game point total in program history.

She was on the All-BEC second team and nished her career with 675 points.

Stevens also made the All-Register volleyball team this year.
