BROOKINGS – The traditional and annual program marking Memorial Day will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Daktronics Room of the Swiftel Center. Events will follow a time-tested format that attendees have come to expect and appreciate.

As a prelude to the gathering, the Brookings High School Band under the direction of Ron Stary will play patriotic music. The band will also play at intervals throughout and close the program with “God Bless America.”

Brookings Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2118 is taking the lead in this year’s program with assistance from American Legion Post No. 74 and other service groups and clubs. Maj. Rebecca Trygstad, South Dakota Army National Guard, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Highlights of the program include: Presentation of the colors by VFW 2118; presentation of the POW/MIA Flag by Rolling Thunder South Dakota Chapter No. 2; Pledge of Allegiance by the audience; reading of Logan’s General Order by retired Army Lt.Col. David L. Zoelle; a floral tribute by service organization auxiliaries; Honor Guard salute by the Joint VFW and American Legion Honor Guard; taps and retirement of the colors.

A welcome will be given by Brookings Deputy Mayor Mary Kidwiler.

The invocation and benediction will be delivered by the Rev. Ivan Yoder, pastor of Brookings Bible Baptist Church.

The Memorial Day address will be given by retired Army Capt. Loren Hanson. Born and raised in Brookings, Hanson joined the South Dakota Army National Guard following graduation from high school here in 1961. He re-enlisted in the regular Army in 1966. His tours of duty included assignments in West Germany, Virginia, Dallas, North Carolina, Vietnam and Illinois before returning to active duty with the South Dakota Army National Guard. He retired on Dec. 1, 1989.

A potluck lunch will be served at noon at the VFW Post, 520 Main Ave.

Additional Memorial Day programs will be held at 1 p.m. at the Neighborhoods at Brookview; at 1:30 p.m. at Edgewood Vista; at 3 p.m. at United Living Community; and at 3 p.m. at Stoneybrook Suites Assisted Living.
