BROOKINGS – The coronavirus pandemic dictated that the Memorial Day observance be held outdoors at the Brookings County Veterans Memorial with precautions such as social distancing and for many the wearing of masks.
Attendees gathered on the edge of the memorial while others watched from near their cars.
Above, in a brief ceremony, an honor guard and rifle squad under the direction of Army veteran and Vietnam combat helicopter pilot Terry Hill fired a 21-gun salute. Wreaths were placed by the auxiliaries of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans, and SDSU’s David Reynolds played “Taps.”
Below, retired Lt. Col. Richard Reid, South Dakota Air National Guard, observed the placing of the three wreaths during the ceremony.
