Horse-drawn groundbreaking

VOLGA – Ground was recently broken for construction of the $150,000 Trygve A. Trooien Horse-Drawn Museum that will be the newest in the growing complex at the Brookings County Museum in Volga.

Local draft horse enthusiast Mike Strohfus and his Percheron/Morgan team of Peter and Paul were called in to power Strohfus’1920s era International plow for the breaking of a furrow on the site in Volga’s City Park.

Museum board members and others gathered for the groundbreaking. Board Vice President Jerry Leslie of Volga is at the reins, with Strohfus assisting, at his left. Work by Kaufmann-Ust Construction of Brookings started last week with completion this fall.

The new building was made possible by a major bequest of $100,000 from Oak Lake farmer and well-known county amateur historian Trygve Trooien, who died at his Oak Lake farm in 2015 at age 65.
