Hot-shooting Golden Eagles drop Bobcats 75-46 in ESD game

BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Central caught fire from the field during a 75-46 defeat of the Bobcats in an Eastern South Dakota Conference boys’ basketball matchup Thursday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

The Golden Eagles shot 65.5 percent (19-of-29) while opening up a 47-25 halftime advantage. They were at 61.9 percent (26-of-42) heading to the fourth and led 67-34.

The visitors knocked down 10 treys in the game.

“It was 22-19 with 7 minutes to go in the second quarter and then the wheels just fell off,” said BHS coach Travis Engebretson. “You know, it was just a few possessions on offense where we didn’t get good looks and then defensively, we just didn’t protect the paint and gave up some wide-open 3-pointers.

“Once again, I feel like a broken record – defensive execution. Scouting report says no open looks, and we give up 3-point shots.

“So it’s back to the drawing board. We don’t have many games left.”

Jonah Dobbs opened the second period with a traditional three-point play and Nick Schefers scored in the paint to pull Brookings within 22-19 with 7:20 showing on the clock.

The Golden Eagles scored 25 of the next 31 points to open up the big cushion at the break.

Sam Rohlfs (6-of-7) scored 14 points, Reece Burckhard (5-of-6) 13 and Austin Huff (4-of-6) and Noah Behrends (4-of-7) 10 apiece for Aberdeen Central, which improved to 8-7.

Burckhard added seven rebounds, four blocked shots, three assists and a steal.

Brookings got 10 points from Nick Schefers.

Tyson Boeve added eight points, Henry Hammrich seven, Brock Longville six and Trent Broksieck five.

All 15 Bobcats in uniform played, with 10 finding the scoring column.

Brookings is host to O’Gorman on Saturday at 7 p.m.
