Houston Baptist completes sweep of South Dakota State

DALLAS, Texas – Dallas Baptist put together back-to-back big innings in the middle frames and went on to defeat South Dakota State, 13-2, Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark. With the seven-inning victory, the Patriots completed a sweep of the season-opening three-game series.

SDSU led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, when DBU erupted for six runs in the home half of the inning. Gus Steiger scored the first run of the game for the Jackrabbits on the back end of a double steal after reaching on an error in the top of the first.

Luke Ira came through with a run-scoring single to center field in the top of the fourth, plating Braeden Brown. Brown had half of the Jackrabbits' four hits in the contest, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

The DBU uprising in the fourth began with an RBI single by Jackson Glenn. Blayne Jones put the Patriots into the lead with a three-run homer off Jackrabbit starter Brady Stover and Jeffrey David added a two-run shot later in the inning after the first SDSU error of the series.

The Patriots tacked on five more runs in the fifth against three different SDSU pitchers, sending 10 men to the plate. Ryan Wrobleski drove in the first run with a base hit and Dan Pruitt followed with a two-run single off reliever Riley McSherry. The other two runs of the inning came across on a sacrifice fly by Christian Boulware and another run-scoring hit by David, who was one of three Patriots with two of the team's 11 hits.

Boulware drove in another run in a two-run sixth for DBU with his second hit of the game and Hayden Ebrecht notched a run-scoring single in his lone at-bat.

Stover, who breezed through the DBU lineup in the first three innings, struck out two and walked one over 4 1/3 innings. He allowed six earned runs on six hits.

DBU starter Dominic Hamel fanned nine and walked two in five innings to earn the victory. Chas Sagedahl and Ross Carver each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Dallas Baptist leads the all-time series, 6-1. ... Freshman pitchers Nate Steenblock and Eli Sundquist combined for the final four outs on the mound for the Jackrabbits in making their collegiate debuts. ... Wyatt Andersen notched his first collegiate hit with a single in the seventh inning.

 DBU 8, SDSU 7 (11 inn.)

DALLAS, Texas – Dallas Baptist’s Jackson Glenn drove in two runs with a double in the bottom of the 11th inning, lifting the Patriots to an 8-7 victory over South Dakota State in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Horner Ballpark.

Jace Grady, who collected three of DBU’s 12 hits, opened the home half of the 11th inning by drawing a walk against Jackrabbit closer Bret Barnett. Austin Bell followed with a bunt single and the Patriots loaded the bases on a walk to Andres Sosa. Glenn then lined his double to right field to plate both Grady and Bell.

Glenn’s heroics marked the second late-inning rally for the Patriots and came after the Jackrabbits grabbed a 7-6 lead in the top of the 11th. Josh Falk led off with a single and pinch-runner Jamie Berg moved up two bases on a pair of wild pitches before Luke Ira reached on an infield single that plated Berg.

DBU sent the see-saw game into extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Grady led off the frame with a double and scored on a base hit by Sosa, who was 2-for-4 and helped the Patriots build a 5-1 lead by capping a five-run third inning with a three-run home run.

The Jackrabbits began to erase the deficit with back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth to pull to within 5-4. Matt Krambeck connected on a two-run home run to left, while Drew Beazley followed with a blast to left-center that knocked out DBU starter Chandler Arnold.

With SDSU reliever Brett Mogen keeping the Patriots off the board, the Jackrabbits gained a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by sophomore right-fielder Ryan McDonald. McDonald’s hit to left field scored both Gus Steiger and Braeden Brown.

Steiger was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles to lead the Jackrabbits’ 10-hit effort. His first double of the game came in the first inning, after which he scored on a wild pitch to give SDSU the early lead.

Jackrabbit starter Rick Atkins allowed five runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two in his collegiate debut.

Mogen fanned three batters and walked three in his four scoreless innings of work. The senior right-hander from Dell Rapids allowed only two hits.
