Huron sweeps ‘Cats

HURON – The Bobcats battled, but came up short in an Eastern South Dakota Conference loss to the Tigers on Thursday night at Huron Arena.

Huron won 25-23, 26-24 and 25-18 to improve to 7-2 and 2-1 in conference play while the ‘Cats fell to 2-8 and 1-1.

In the first set, Brookings led 18-11 and  was still up, 20-15, following a kill by Kylie Tucker before the Tigers rallied with a four-point run to pull within 20-19. A Kailee Bartels’ kill off a Michaela Jewett assist made it 21-19, and then, Allie Gordon set up Jewett for another kill for a 22-19 edge.

After a Huron timeout, the Tigers scored three straight to tie the set at 22-22. The teams traded points before Huron scored the final two for the 25-23 win.

It was the same story in Set 2 as the ‘Cats led 17-11 following a Regan Weisbeck kill. Both teams scored to make it 18-12 and then Huron rallied with a 5-0 run to get within 18-17. The Tiger moved ahead, 20-19, to force Brookings to play catchup, which the Bobcats did when Tucker’s kill evened the set at 22-22. A pair of Jewett kills, sandwiched around two Huron points, tied it at 24-24 before back-to-back Bobcat hitting errors allowed the Tigers to complete the comeback for a 26-24 set win.

No play-by-play was available for the third set as Huron closed out the match with the 25-18 win.

Johanna Miller led the Bobcat offense with seven kills and added a pair of block assists while Tucker and Jewett finished with six kills apiece. Tucker tacked on five block assists while Jewett tallied 17 set assists and 23 digs. Bartels notched six kills as Miranda Ysbrand and Ashlyn Borah collected 15 and 13 digs, respectively.

The Bobcats play host to Harrisburg on Tuesday.

 Arlington def. Lake Preston, 3-0

ARLINGTON – The host Cardinals posted their 10th win of the season and remained undefeated in the Dakota Valley Conference with a sweep of Lake Preston on Thursday night.

Arlington won 25-9, 25-22 and 25-20 to improve to 10-4 overall and 4-0 in the DVC as the Divers dropped to 2-9 and 0-3.

Jayna Haufschild tallied 17 kills as Marissa Baker notched 32 set assists, in addition to eight service aces. Jeryn Christensen collected 17 digs while Hadley Carson added 14, to go along with six kills and three aces. Mady Gilbertson added seven kills and Kasey Pistulka contributed nine digs.

Brenna Woodcock and Lindsay Hillestad finished with four kills apiece to lead Lake Preston as Lexie Larsen had eight set assists and an ace serve. Holly Andrews led the Diver defense with 10 digs; Lexis Currey chipped in with eight, to go along with three kills; and Annika Nelson finished with seven digs. Hillestad and Nelson each recorded a block.

Both teams compete in Saturday’s Lake Preston Invitational.

 Dell Rapids St. Mary def. Estelline/Hendricks, 3-0

ESTELLINE – The Cardinals cruised to a first-set win over Estelline on Thursday night but had to work a little harder to complete the sweep in Dakota Valley Conference volleyball action.

St. Mary won the first set, 25-12, before prevailing 26-24 and 27-25 in the second and third sets, respectively, to improve to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the DVC.

Sophie Johnson led the Redhawk attack with 11 kills and a set assist while adding nine digs defensively as Estelline/Hendricks dropped to 5-5 and 1-2.

Brinn Begalka posted a double-double of 12 assists and 10 digs, to go along with a pair of service aces.

Kaylee Johnson contributed eight digs, four kills and ace as Tasha Vohlken chipped in with four kills, an assist, a block and an ace.

Veronica Beck led DRSM at the net with nine kills and four blocks, along with a pair of aces as Paige Bunkers notched seven assists, five digs and two aces. Marcie Brown and Carly Maxwell finished with 11 and 10 digs, respectively, to lead the defense.

The Redhawks compete in the Lake Preston Invitational on Saturday while St. Mary travels to Howard on Tuesday.

• De Smet def. Oldham-Ramona/Rutland, 3-0

DE SMET – The Lady Bulldogs swept ORR in DVC volleyball action on Thursday night by set scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-22 to improve to 7-4 and 2-2 in conference play.

Rynn Osthus led De Smet with six kills, six aces, seven set assists and two block assists as Cierra Sazue added five kills, two solo blocks and a block assist.

Avery Hyland had 10 kills to lead the Raiders, who fell to 1-9 and 0-3. Khloe Tieman tallied 23 set assists while Rylie Aschmeller collected 17 digs.

On Saturday, ORR takes on Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in Forestburg while De Smet plays in the Lake Preston Invitational.

• Deubrook Area def. Elkton-Lake Benton, 3-1

WHITE – The Dolphins had a hiccup in Set 2, but pulled it together to hand Elkton-Lake Benton its DVC loss on Thursday night.

Deubrook Area won the first set, 25-20, before the Lady Elks captured the second, 25-23. The Dolphins recovered and won the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-17, to improve to 6-5 on the season and 3-1 in the DVC.

Ashley Vandermeer finished with 14 kills, 17 digs and a solo block while Shaylee DeBeer added 11 kills, 18 digs, 12 set assists, a pair of block assists and an ace serve for the Dolphins. Sarah Urevig tallied 21 set assists, eight kills, 12 digs and an ace.

Hannah Krog’s 10 kills led a balanced ELB offense as Aubrey Wirth and Emily Miller matched that total with 10 kills apiece. Julia Drietz notched 29 set assists while Rachael Krog collected 19 digs as the Lady Elks dropped to 4-8 and 3-1 in the DVC.
