Huron sweeps doubleheader from Brookings, 11-5 and 7-6

HURON – The Tigers swept a high school baseball doubleheader from the Bobcats on Wednesday, winning 11-5 and 7-6.

Brookings (2-10) plays a twinbill at Brandon Valley on Friday at 5 p.m.

Game 1

 Huron 11, Brookings 5

The Tigers broke open a 4-3 game with three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth en route to the victory.

Walker Schilts went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs.

Bryce Steffen homered, doubled and drove in three runs. He also scored three times.

Jake Wehde ended up 3-for-4. Matt Katz tripled and doubled while driving in a run and scoring three times. Jett McGirr added two hits and three runs, and Emerson Devries doubled.

McGirr, Steffen, Katz and Schilts batted Nos. 2-5 in the Huron lineup.

Kobe Bush picked up the win after giving up three runs on three hits with a strikeout in three innings. McGirr allowed two runs on three hits and eight walks with three strikeouts over the final four frames.

The Bobcats’ Tyler Kreutner went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

Ryan McMacken, Christian Mediger and Daniel Messerli added a hit and an RBI apiece.

Caden Wright took the loss on the mound, surrendering seven runs – six earned – on 11 hits and three walks with a strikeout in four innings.

Game 2

 Huron 7, Brookings 6

Emerson Devries had three RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run single with two away in the bottom of the fifth, as the Tigers completed the sweep.

The Bobcats built a 6-3 lead through 3 1/2 innings.

Devries had an RBI single in the fourth.

Bryce Steffen tripled and Matt Katz walked to open the fifth. Steffen took home on a double steal to cut the deficit to 6-5. Later in the inning, Devries’ big hit put the hosts on top 7-6.

Walker Schilts picked up the win on the mound, throwing three scoreless innings in relief of Steffen. He gave up three hits and struck out a pair of batters.

Brookings’ Brock Luze finished 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Tyler Kreutner was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs.

Justin Devine ended up 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Brady Ammann and Parker Rykhus both had a hit and an RBI, and Tanner Shepardson drove in a run.

Daniel Messerli took the loss after giving up seven runs – three earned – on six hits with six Ks and two walks in five innings. Luze tossed a scoreless sixth.
