BROOKINGS – Huron dropped the Bobcats 25-17, 29-27, 25-21 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference volleyball match Tuesday at the BHS Auxiliary Gymnasium.

“Overall, we struggled offensively tonight,” said Brookings coach Jodi Melius. “We gave Huron too many unforced errors, too many points; but there were some really bright spots, as well. Kailee Bartels hit .333; she made some great decisions. Johanna Miller hit better tonight than she did on Saturday.

“So we had some bright spots, but overall we have some work to do.”

The Tigers pulled away down the stretch in Set 1 to grab an early 1-0 lead in the match.

The Bobcats came out strong in the second, opening up a 14-7 advantage.

Huron chipped away but still trailed 24-20; however, four consecutive points kept the visitors in the set.

Tied at 27, Alaina Dale had a kill and an ace to give the Tigers the set win.

Huron outscored Brookings 8-2 to open the third. But Brookings battled back, as the set was tied at 19-all. The Tigers scored six of the final eight points to complete the sweep.

“We just need to stay in rhythm and trust ourselves – just believe in ourselves when it comes to the end of a set and have that confidence that we’re able to get it done,” Melius added.

For the Bobcats, Bartels and Kylie Tucker both finished with seven kills. Miller added six, Michaela Jewett five and Regan Weisbeck four.

Brookings totaled 10 blocks, led by Tucker’s 2 1/2. Bartels and Clarissa Miller (one solo) both added two, while Jewett and Johanna Miller chipped in with 1 1/2 apiece.

Jewett also notched 27 set assists and 10 digs. Molly Steffensen and Ashlyn Borah each had 14 digs, and Miranda Ysbrand contributed 10.

Brookings (1-4, 0-1) travels to Brandon Valley on Thursday.

Junior varsity – Brookings 25-14, 25-22.

Sophomore – Brookings 25-23, 25-15

Freshman – Huron 25-23, 25-20.
