IUPUI completes sweep of SDSU

INDIANAPOLIS – South Dakota State dropped a 5-2 contest in its Summit League softball series finale at IUPUI on Saturday.

SDSU (13-21, 0-3) had eight hits as Julia Andersen and Ali Herdliska both notched a double.

Abby Deane (7-12) started and tossed three innings in the circle, allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Madison Hope threw the final three frames, giving up an unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts.

The Jackrabbits struck first for the third consecutive game, taking a 2-0 lead in the first.

Emily Ensrud singled and Andersen doubled to open the game. Brittney Morse followed with an RBI single and, with two outs, Mallory McQuistan added a run-scoring hit of her own.

SDSU’s lead was cut in half after a home run by IUPUI’s Kristin London in the third.

The Jaguars took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by Roni Patterson’s RBI single and Mandy Dallas’ RBI triple. Patterson added a run-scoring double in the sixth to provide for the final margin.

For IUPUI (13-17, 3-0), Nikole Finch gave up two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and a walk in a complete-game performance to post the pitching win.

Patterson totaled two hits and two RBIs.
