BROOKINGS – Jackrabbit Baja, a student mechanical engineering club in its inaugural year at South Dakota State University, is asking for the public’s help in raising money to build an all-terrain vehicle.
Jackrabbit Baja is composed of about 15 mechanical engineering students ranging from freshman to seniors. Their goal is to design, engineer and build a single-seat, all-terrain vehicle each academic year.
Jackrabbit Baja will compete with its all-terrain vehicle in an annual Society of Automotive Engineer (SAE) collegiate design series competition, against 99 other schools from around the world. The SAE Baja competition will consist of four dynamic events and one static event. The dynamic events will test the vehicles maneuverability, suspension, acceleration and traction.
The SAE design series will challenge students to expand their knowledge beyond a textbook and put real-world engineering practices to work. Students will have to work as a team to design and build a fully-functional vehicle. This club will further student education and give students a chance to network with other engineers and employers from around the country and the world.
Each academic year, Jackrabbit Baja will look to raise $15,000 in order to meet the demands of building an all-terrain vehicle. While most of the funds have been raised, Jackrabbit Baja is still looking for support to help members reach their fundraising goals.
Currently, Jackrabbit Baja has a crowdfunding project set up through the South Dakota State University Foundation, using a program called Rabbit Raisers.
The crowdfunding project will only be open until Wednesday, March 6. All funds will go toward helping the club/team build its all-terrain vehicle. Donations can be made at https://rabbitraisers.org/p/jackrabbitbajasae/.
This year Jackrabbit Baja will compete in Gorman, California, in May. The club is excited to compete in its first ever Baja SAE design series competition and is looking forward to the vast amount of knowledge and experience that will be gained from this event.
