SDSU athletes helping out in community

BROOKINGS – The Boys & Girls Club of Brookings Clubhouse preschool hosts guest readers throughout the course of the school year. In the last month, the Club has had a few special Jackrabbits visit. South Dakota State student athletes Seth Gross and Mike Daum have visited and read to preschoolers.

The Boys & Girls Club Preschool’s mission is to inspire our preschoolers to be caring, responsible and productive citizens. By having guest readers come into the preschool, staff are introducing them to community members who have the same qualities they are instilling in them. Staff say they are also helping to make the preschoolers feel like they are a part of the Brookings community, too.

“I think it is extremely important to volunteer in the community to try and have an impact on young kids. You never know who you might inspire,” South Dakota State wrestling coach Chris Bono said.

“Our student-athletes are role models to these youngsters, and to be able to spend some time with them is invaluable. We, as the SDSU wrestling team, love being able to get out in the community and give back any way we can.”

When asked why he enjoys getting out into the community and volunteering, SDUS basketball player Mike Daum said, “It’s so fun to give back to the community that has shown so much support. I love kids, and being able to read to them means I get to give back to them.”
