BROOKINGS – For the third time in four years, the Jackrabbits had an upset of a top-10 team in their sights, but came up short in the end.

Seventh-ranked Oregon rallied from a 45-40 halftime deficit to pull out an 87-79 win on Wednesday night in front of 2,509 fans at Frost Arena.

“Fun game; really entertaining game,” said SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston. “Really frustrating game – we’ve been down that road before – we’ve played some really good teams close; really love to see our players get over that last hurdle, so frustrating in that sense, but there are a lot of positives.

“We’ve had games like this before with that level of team and just haven’t made enough plays – could be offensive or defensive – and that’s really the difference. They made a lot of big shots when they needed them.”

The Jacks hit 16-of-29 shots (55.2 percent) in the first half, including 7-of-13 from beyond the arc (53.8 percent) to build the five-point halftime lead as Madison Guebert drained five 3’s on the way to 17 points while Myah Selland added 13, which included a 3-pointer that gave SDSU its biggest lead at 35-27 with 6:29 to play.

A pair of Selland free throws and a basket in the lane by Tagyn Larson to open the second half made it 49-40 two minutes in.

SDSU still led by seven points – 53-46 – after another Selland free throw at the 6-minute mark before Oregon responded with a 10-0 run in less than 3 minutes of play to take a 56-53 lead.

Sabrina Ionescu’s trey with 1:49 left in the third gave Oregon its largest lead of the night at 63-56 and the Ducks matched that margin at the quarter break with a 65-58 advantage.

It took the Jacks just over half of the fourth quarter to come all the way back to tie the game at 74-74 when Sydney Palmer knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner.

The teams traded baskets in the paint as Ruthy Hebard scored for Oregon and Macy Miller answered on SDSU’s next possession.

An Ionescu bucket made it 78-76 Ducks with 3:15 to play before Satou Sabally drained a 3-pointer to put the visitors up by five with 2:28 on the clock.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Selland with 1:14 left got the Jacks within two – 81-79 – but Ionescu hit another 3 inside of a minute to make it a two-possession game at 84-79.

When the Jacks came up empty on their next possession, they had to foul and Oregon put the game away from the foul line – converting 3-of-4 free throws in the final 31 seconds for the eight-point win.

Guebert and Selland both finished with 21 points; Miller chipped in with 14; and Larson had nine points and eight boards as SDSU dropped to 6-4 on the season.

Sabally had a game-high 27 points while Ionescu contributed 26 to go along with nine assists and eight rebounds as the Ducks improved to 8-1 overall.

Notes (From SDSU SID): Miller needs four points to become the program’s all-time scoring leader with 1,884. She also is 116 points shy of become the first women’s player at State to reach the 2,000-point plateau. The point guard now needs 390 points to finish her career as The Summit League’s all-time scoring leader, passing Oral Roberts’ Kevi Luper (2,277; 2009-12). … With 21 points Wednesday, Guebert is now 10th in career scoring at SDSU with 1,481 career points. … Guebert tied a season high with six 3-pointers Wednesday and she now needs eight more to become SDSU’s and The Summit League’s all-time 3-point shooter, passing Jackrabbit Jill Young’s (2008-11) 305 treys. … Oregon snapped the Jackrabbits’ seven-game home win streak that dated to Jan. 27, 2018. … The Jacks fall to 8-27 overall and 4-6 in Frost Arena against ranked opponents.

SDSU plays host to Savannah State on Friday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
