Jackrabbits complete three-game sweep of Mastodons

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State overcame a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning and then added five in the sixth en route to a 10-6 defeat of IPFW to complete a three-game Summit League baseball series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

Luke Ringhofer, Nick Smith and Skyler Wenninger had two hits apiece. Ringhofer extended his hitting streak to 15 games and has reached base safely in 19 consecutive games

The Mastodons’ Shannon Baker hit a pair of two-run home runs, the first of which made it 3-0 in the top of the fifth. Brock Logan, who finished with two hits, had a solo shot in the second.

Wenninger hit a homer in the bottom of the fifth and Matt Johnson followed with a two-run single to tie things up at 3-all. Johnson has reached base safely in all 23 Jackrabbit games this season.

Ringhofer made it 5-3 with a two-run single in the sixth. Newt Johnson added a sacrifice fly, while Tony Kjolsing and Philip Jacobson both drew bases-loaded walks to push the margin to 8-3.

Logan had an RBI single in the top of the seventh but Newt Johnson answered with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning.

Baker’s second two-run homer cut the deficit to 9-6 in the eighth. Phil Velez closed out the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

Derek Feige, the second of five SDSU pitchers, earned the win after giving up one hit and two walks in 1 2/3 innings of work. Starter Ethan Kenkel allowed three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Chris Halbur pitched a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts. He has not allowed a run in 16 innings (11 appearances) this year and has 19 strikeouts.

The Jackrabbits stranded 15 runners, leaving the bases loaded in the final five frames.

For IPFW (5-20, 1-8), Zak Kellogg and Brady Hettinger added two hits apiece.

South Dakota State (13-10, 6-3) takes on the Hawkeyes on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Iowa City.

The Jackrabbits scored nine runs with two outs in the seventh inning to turn a one-run game into a run-rule victory.

Nick Smith, who finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs, lined the first pitch in the bottom of the first to right field for a triple and later scored on a Newt Johnson hit to get SDSU going.

Tony Kjolsing, who was back in the starting lineup for the first time in more than a month, added a RBI hit to make it 2-0.

Johnson’s sacrifice fly in the second pushed the margin to 3-0.

IPFW’s Jackson Boyce was 3-for-4, including an RBI double during the Mastodon’s two-run fifth frame.

The runs ended a string of 26 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings by Jackrabbit pitching.

Luke Ringhofer ended up 3-for-5 for SDSU.

Newt Johnson, who totaled three RBIs, Kjolsing, who had two RBIs, and Philip Jacobson added two hits apiece.

Smith had a pair of run-scoring hits in the big seventh. Phil Velez had a two-run single. Ringhofer, Newt Johnson, Kjolsing and Jacobson added an RBI hit apiece.

Austin Kost earned the win after giving up two runs – one earned – on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. Bryce Hanson surrendered one hit and struck out a pair of batters over the final 1 2/3.
