KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The South Dakota State volleyball team got swept by the host Kangaroos and later dropped a four-set match to Austin Peay to open the season at the UMKC Invitational on Friday.
“There were a lot of positives to take away from today. Our offense gradually got better and we were able to get more people involved,” SDSU coach Nicole Cirillo said. “We showed a lot of fight and improvement and I look forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.”
The Jackrabbits (0-2) take on Western Michigan today at 11 a.m. to close out the event.

Makenzie Hennen led the Jackrabbit offense with 11 kills, but the Kangaroos posted a 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 victory.
Crystal Burk registered 10 kills and eight digs in her first collegiate match. Fellow freshman Ellie Thein came off the bench for a team-best 10 digs.
• Austin Peay 3, SDSU 1
The Governors won 25-21, 26-24, 22-25, 25-17.
SDSU’s Ashlynn Smith, who hit .409, and Sydney Andrews each had 12 kills. Makenzie Hennen and Crystal Burk chipped in nine kills apiece.
Hennen had a team-best 14 digs. Maddie Fay had 42 set assists and nine digs.
