BOCA RATON, Fla. – South Dakota State bounced back from a three-set loss to Florida Atlantic with a four-set win over North Florida at the Owls Classic on Friday.

“It was great to see the team bounce back from this morning after a quick turnaround. They finished the day strong with a win,” SDSU coach Nicole Cirillo said. “This afternoon we showed our continuous growth in our offensive abilities with contributions from all of our attackers.”

The Jackrabbits (3-9) wrap up the event taking on San Jose State today at 9 a.m.

The Jackrabbits won by the set scores of 25-15, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-19.

Makenzie Hennen had a match-high 15 kills and added 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and ninth of her career.

Ashlynn Smith picked up her second double-double of the year with 14 kills and 14 digs.

Sierra Peterson recorded a career-best 13 kills. Maddie Fay logged 50 set assists.

On defense, Ellie Thein had 14 digs, while Payton Richardson had 4 1/2 blocks (one solo) to go with seven kills and a career-high-tying six digs.

Madilyn McCarty and Taryn Griffey each had 10 kills for North Florida.

In the opening set, the Jackrabbits used a 5-1 run to take an 11-4 lead fueled by four kills. SDSU built a 17-9 lead with a four-point spurt and then cruised to the win.

SDSU fell behind 8-3 in the second set before using a 5-1 run to pull within one at 9-8 on freshman Sydney Andrews’ kill. The Jacks tied the set at 17 on Smith’s fifth kill of the match. SDSU took a 24-21 lead on Peterson’s eighth kill of the match and then held on for the win.

With multiple ties late in the third set, South Dakota State took a 22-21 lead after back-to-back Smith kills. The teams traded points and Andrews had a kill to tie the set at 23. The Ospreys then finished the set with a pair of kills.

The Jackrabbits sprinted out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth set and pushed their lead to 21-9 with a 9-2 run midway through the set. UNF made it interesting down the stretch using a 10-3 run to pull within 24-19. Hennen won the set and match with a kill.

Notes: The last time South Dakota State won three matches during the nonconference portion of its schedule was 2015, when they won three. ... The Jacks had 10 service aces, led by Hennen’s and Kasey Brower’s three each.

 Florida Atlantic 3, SDSU 0

Smith led the Jackrabbits’ offense but it wasn’t enough as they lost 25-14, 25-23, 25-19 to the Owls.

Smith hit .238, collecting nine kills and eight digs. Hennen had eight kills and Thein added seven digs.

Smith (one solo), Hennen, Richardson and Andrews each recorded 1 1/2 blocks. Smith also had a pair of service aces.

Fay dished out 24 set assists.

Massiel Matos led FAU with 13 kills.

Notes: The Jackrabbits hit a season-high .462 in the final set. ... SDSU out-blocked its fifth opponent of the season, 7-3.
