Jackrabbits fall to No. 16 Cyclones

BROOKINGS – The South Dakota State wrestling teams’ five match dual winning streak came to an end Friday night as they fell to No. 16 Iowa State 22-17.

The Jackrabbits jumped out to an 8-0 lead after Zach Carlson and Tanner Sloan each picked up major decision victories.

Carlson took down Marcus Coleman at the 184-pound class and Sloan beat Joel Shapiro at 197.

SDSU then fell in its next four matches to fall behind 15-8. Danny Vega was pinned by Alex Mackall at 125 and SDSU head coach Damion Hahn said that was the most crucial match of the dual.

“They’re a good team,” Hahn said. “That’s just the bottom line. We go out there and at 184 and 197 there are guys that are ranked pretty close to each other and Zach and Tanner go out there and dominate. That’s huge. … 125 was probably one of the featured matches tonight because you had two guys that are ranked. It was a match that we thought we could win and you go out there and we’re tying it up and the ball is starting to roll for us. All of the sudden we get stepped over and get pinned and that kind of took a little bit out of the sail.”

The Jackrabbits were able to fight back as Henry Pohlmeyer won via decision over Ryan Leisure at 149 to make it 15-11.

Iowa State’s David Carr got a major decision over Colten Carlson to give the Cyclones a 19-11 lead. Carlson trailed 14-2 after the first period, but was able to avoid a technical fall, losing 16-5.

Carr’s victory looked like it would seal the victory for ISU, but the match wasn’t over. SDSU’s Tanner Cook pinned Chase Straw at 165 and get the Jacks within two points. It was Cook’s 10th win by fall this season.

“What do you say about [Cook’s] performance. He is never out of any match he wrestles in. [Straw] was the Big 12 champion last year at 157. He’s up a weight and [Cook] goes out there and gets another fall. Momentum is important in a dual like tonight,” Hahn said.

Cade King was unable to top Samuel Colbray in the final match of the night at 174. Colbray won via decision and gave the Cylclones the victory. Hahn said the Jacks can’t let this loss get to their head and have to have a short memory.

“I told them we can be upset, but there are positives from that. I told them ‘have a short memory because we have to get back to work.’ … The match is over and there’s nothing we can do about it now. We can prepare and improve on some of the positions we were in,” Hahn said.

SDSU is now 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12. Hahn said there was a lot of positives that the Jackrabbits can take from this loss.

“In a lot of those matches you can take away that we had some of that fight and not giving up. At the 157-pound match avoiding a tech fall. Zach and Tanner pick up the [major decisions] and those two guys that they wrestled were quality guys and they’re out there dominating them. I don’t think their opponents scored an offensive point. … Vega wasn’t even wrestling a year ago and now he’s here, he’s in a great situation. He’s blossoming into a great young man not only on the mat, but also off the mat,” Hahn said.

Up next, the Jackrabbits will conclude their three-game homestand with a dual against Oklahoma on Jan. 26. The dual is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
