Jackrabbits hold off Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The South Dakota State men’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a 97-90 win Saturday over IPFW in front of 1,824 fans at the Gates Sports Center.

SDSU (25-6, 13-1 Summit League) shot 49.3 percent in the game and hit 16-of-33 from deep as five Jackrabbits scored in double figures.

Mike Daum led the way with his 11th 30-point game of the season, finishing with 31 with eight 3-pointers (out of 12 attempts). He added a team-high 13 rebounds for his 18th double-double this year.

Daum averaged a double-double of 23.61 points and 10.06 rebounds during the regular season. He totaled 732 points and 312 rebounds in 31 games.

David Jenkins Jr. added 16 in the scoring column and dished four assists, even with Brandon Key and one behind Tevin King’s five for the team lead. King notched his second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.

Reed Tellinghuisen was 3-for-5 from deep to score 13 points, while Skyler Flatten rounded out the top scorers with 10 of his own.

The Mastodons (18-13, 7-7) shot 45.5 percent as John Konchar scored 31 points. Bryson Scott add-ed 16 points, Kason Harrell and Jordan King 11 apiece, and Xzavier Taylor 10.

Down 18-13 at the under-12 media break, a layup from Key out of the rest sparked the Jackrabbits on a 17-1 run over the next 4 1/2 minutes, helping SDSU build a 30-19 lead with 7:31 to play.

SDSU pushed the margin to 15 on a Tellinghuisen 3-pointer at the 5:43 mark, but saw the Masto-dons rally to within 43-38 down the stretch before Daum hit the final basket of the half and sent the Jackrabbits into the break ahead 45-38.

Up 53-44 early in the second, Daum scored the game’s next 11 points to propel SDSU on a 16-2 run and give the Jackrabbits their largest lead of the night at 69-46 with 13:45 to play.

IPFW, however, came roaring back with runs of six, eight and 11 answered to climb within 79-76 around the 7-minute mark, and later pulled within 82-81 with 4:41 on the clock.

The teams traded buckets until the final minute but the Jacks never relinquished the lead and scored six points in the final 48 seconds to complete the season sweep of the Mastodons.

SDSU finished with just four turnovers and IPFW had five.

Notes 

South Dakota State is now 18-12 all-time against IPFW and has won four straight against the Masto-dons dating back to last season. … At least three Jackrabbits have reached double figures in the same game in 21 consecutive contests. … SDSU reached the 25-win mark for the fourth time in its Division I history. They Jackrabbits won a Division I-era best 27 games (against eight losses) in 2011-12, went 26-8 in 2015-16 and finished 25-10 in 2012-13. They won the conference tourney title all three years. … Daum moved to third in school history and fourth on the Summit League’s all-time charts with a career scoring average of 21.28 in 100 games. … With 2,128 career points, Daum trails Valparaiso’s Bryce Drew (2,142 from 1994-98) by 14 points for ninth place in Summit League history. UMKC/Oakland’s Reggie Hamilton (2,185 from 2007-12), who is in eighth place, is also with-in striking distance this season.
