Jackrabbits in the National Football League: Week 3

Posted

Part of a weekly update, following the three active Jackrabbits in the National Football League.

Dallas Goedert (Philadelphia Eagles) SDSU: 2014-17

Weekly Notes: Goedert earned his first NFL start in week three against the Indianapolis Colts. He brought in all seven of his targets for 73 yards and recorded his first NFL touchdown on the Eagles’ opening drive in the 20-16 win last Sunday afternoon.

The tight end played 55 of the 82 offensive plays (and 10 special teams plays) during the game and tied teammate Zach Ertz for the most receiving yards (73), including a long for 19 yards in second quarter.

His touchdown came on QB Carson Wentz’s for offensive drive of the year, as the SDSU alum slipped down the right seam and caught the ball all by himself in the middle of the endzone for 13 yards to give the Eagles the early 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter with 9:45 left to play, Goedert caught his long of the day on a flag route up the right sideline for 19 yards to start their fourth offensive series of the ball game. The drive ended with a field goal to put Philadelphia up 10-7 with 3:09 left in the half.

His long of 12 yards in the second half came with the Eagles down 16-13 with 9:02 left in the game. Wentz scrambled out of trouble and found Goedert open short left to pick up the first down. The drive concluded with a four-yard touchdown run to take a 20-16 lead over the Colts.

He led the team in catches with seven while he next-best behind Ertz in targets for the 2-1 Eagles.

Up Next: at Tennessee Titans (Sunday, Sept. 30 at Noon)

Adam Vinatieri (Indianapolis Colts) SDSU: 1991-94

Weekly Notes: Vinatieri scored 10 points going three-for-three on field goals and one-for-one in point-after attempts. He had makes of 35, 31, and 28 yards.

His 35 and 31-yard field goals in the third quarter tied the game 10-10, and then took the lead, 13-10, against the Eagles while his 28-yard field goal recaptured the 16-13 lead in the fourth quarter before a late Philadelphia touchdown to knock off the Colts, 20-16.

On his last field goal of the day, he tied Morten Anderson for the most field goals made in NFL history with 565. With one more made field goal, Vinatieri will obviously break the all-time NFL record - which is just the first of two all-time marks he’s expected to own by season’s end.

Vinatieri entered today’s game needing 43 points to tie Andersen (2,544) for the most points scored in NFL history. He could break that record by mid-season.

Adam Vinatieri has now tied for the most field goals in @NFL history.

Up Next: vs. Houston Texans (Sunday, Sept. 30 at Noon)

Bryan Witzmann (Minnesota Vikings) SDSU: 2010-13

Weekly Notes: Witzmann joined the Minnesota Vikings, signing a contract officially on Monday, Sept. 10, and was not active for his second game with the Vikings against the Buffalo Bills. The Vikings lost 27-6 to the Bills on Sunday afternoon.
