BROOKINGS – South Dakota State used a 22-9 run to close out the first half to take control en route to a 78-54 nonconference win over the University of Mary on Sunday afternoon at Frost Arena.
Brody Sharkey’s 3-pointer with 7:47 left in the half gave the Marauders a 19-17 edge, before David Jenkins Jr. sandwiched a pair of treys around a basket in the paint and two free throws from Mike Daum to get the Jackrabbit run started.
Reed Tellinghuisen scored SDSU’s final five points of the half on a 3-pointer and a pair of charity tosses for a 39-28 Jackrabbit lead.
Lane Severyn’s 3-pointer pushed SDSU’s lead to 20 points – 52-32 – 5 1/2 minutes into the second half before another 3-pointer from Ian Theisen gave the Jacks their biggest lead at 78-52 inside of a minute to play.
SDSU held a 48-34 rebounding advantage with 18 second-chance points and outscored the Marauders, 30-16, in the paint to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Daum posted a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Jacks as Jenkins Jr. and Theisen chipped in with 13 and 10, respectively.
Sharkey finished with nine points and five boards to lead Mary.
SDSU plays host to Alabama State on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff before taking on the fourth-ranked Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan., on Friday night at 7 p.m.
