Jackrabbits rally for series split with Mavericks

BROOKINGS – Derek Hackman capped the series with a three-run walkoff homer as South Dakota State and Omaha split a four-game Summit League set over the weekend at Erv Huether Field.

The Jackrabbits (9-19, 4-8) host Western Illinois this coming weekend, with a doubleheader Friday at noon and single games Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Mavericks are now 12-16 (7-5).

Sunday

Game 1

 SDSU 6, UNO 0 (7 inn.)

Drew Beazley and Ryan Bourassa combined on a three-hit shutout in the scheduled seven-inning game.

Beazley went four innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Bourassa worked the final three for the save, surrendering just one hit with a trio of strikeouts and three walks.

Landon Badger was 3-for-4, Derek Hackman 2-for-3 and Luke Ira 2-for-4.

Hackman opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first.

In the second, Jess Bellows and Badger stroked RBI doubles and Ira added a run-scoring single to make it 4-0.

Avery Mellman plated Hackman with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Garrett Stout homered to right in the fifth to provide for the final margin.

The Jackrabbits totaled 11 hits.

Game 2

 SDSU 9, UNO 8

Derek Hackman’s three-run blast capped a six-run ninth frame as the Jackrabbits rallied for a series split.

Garrett Stout and Jess Bellows, who finished 3-for-3, sandwiched walks around Ryan McDonald’s pinch-hit single to open the rally.

Landon Badger was hit by a pitch to force in Stout – leaving the score at 8-4.

Luke Ira drove in pinch-runner Jamie Berg with a sacrifice fly and Drew Beazley followed with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 8-6.

That set the stage for Hackman.

Tyler Olmstead – the last of five Jackrabbit pitchers – earned the win.

The Mavericks’ Keil Krumwiede was 4-for-5 with a two-run homer. Grant Goldston also hit a two-run bomb.

UNO out-hit SDSU 14-10.

Saturday

Game 1

 UNO 2, SDSU 1

Chris Esposito drove in both Maverick runs, including an RBI single that put the Mavericks ahead for good in the eighth frame.

He homered in the sixth.

SDSU pulled even in the bottom of the seventh as Wyatt Andersen logged a hit, Drew Beazley reached on an error and Landon Badger got about via a bunt single.

Owen Bishop plated pinch-runner Colton Cox with a fielder’s choice.

Omaha reliever Tanner Howe threw 2 2/3 perfect innings to close it out and earn the win. He struck out a pair. Starter Richie Holetz surrendered one run on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 6 1/3.

Masen Prososki was 2-for-3 and Ryan Doran 2-for-4.

SDSU’s Adam Mazur surrendered two runs on eight hits with 11 Ks and a pair of walks in seven innings. Eli Sundquist tossed the final two frames, giving up one hit with three strikeouts and a walk.

Game 2

 UNO 10, SDSU 5

Omaha’s Chris Esposito drove in a run with a single in the first. Masen Prososki had a two-run single in the second to make it 3-0.

SDSU’s Drew Beazley came through with an RBI double and scored on Garrett Stout’s single to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the second.

The Mavericks took control after that.

Ryan Doran singled in a run and Mike Boeve forced in another with a base on balls in the fifth.

Doran followed up Brett Bonar’s RBI single with a two-run blast in the sixth, leaving the score at 8-2. Keil Krumwiede had an RBI single in the top of the eighth.

The Jackrabbits’ Carson Max recorded a run-scoring hit in the eighth. Wyatt Andersen scampered home on a wild pitch.

Esposito’s RBI single in the ninth put Omaha ahead 10-4.

SDSU’s Luke Ira, who finished 3-for-3, closed the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.

Henry Ristvedt – the second of four UNO pitchers – was credited with the victory. He threw 2 1/3 hitless frames, striking out three and walking one.

Doran (three RBIs), Prososki, Esposito and Krumwiede each totaled two hits.

SDSU starter Cody Carlson gave up five runs – three earned – on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.
