Jackrabbits rout Wichita State

BROOKINGS – It wasn’t shocking how badly the Jackrabbits beat up on Wichita State on Wednesday night at Frost Arena.

South Dakota State shot a season-best 69.2 percent from the field as the Jacks knocked down 36-of-52 shots from the floor in the 96-64 nonconference win over the Shockers.

Madison Guebert banged a 3-pointer 6 seconds into the game to get the Jacks started and Macy Miller completed an old-fashioned three-point play 2 minutes in to give SDSU a 10-0 lead and the home team never looked back.

The Jacks led 21-11 at the quarter break and built its lead to 25 points late in the second quarter after another Guebert trey.

The Shockers went on a 9-3 run over the final 2:23 to get within 49-30 at halftime.

Another 3-pointer by Guebert put the Jackrabbits back up by 24 points, 56-32, just 90 seconds into the third quarter, before Wichita State clawed back to within 13 points, 62-49, with 3:50 to play.

But from there, SDSU put together another big run over the final four minutes of the frame – 17-4 – capped off by Sydney Palmer’s 3-pointer, to lead 79-53 through three.

The Jackrabbit lead peaked at 35 points twice in the fourth – on a Miller basket in the lane with 4:32 on the clock and then again on Chynna Stevens’ hoop in the paint a possession later – as SDSU cruised to a 32-point win.

Miller was perfect from the field (9-of-9, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc) to lead the Jacks with 22 points as she dealt out a career-high eight assists. Guebert was next with 19 points and a career-best six dimes while Myah Selland and Tagyn Larson chipped in with 15 points apiece.

Rangie Bessard dropped 25 to lead the Shockers, who dropped to 5-9 on the season. Angie Tompkins added 12 points and eight rebounds.
