Jackrabbits sweep Mavericks

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State picked up two more victories against Omaha over the weekend at Erv Huether Field to complete a three-game Summit League baseball series sweep.

The Jackrabbits won 14-4 in seven innings on Saturday and rallied for an 8-6 triumph on Sunday. They won the opener 5-4 in 10 on Friday.

SDSU (15-24) currently sits in second place in the conference standings with a 13-8 mark. Oral Roberts (30-15) leads the way at 19-5.

SDSU wraps up the nonconference portion of its schedule with a game at Wichita State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Jackrabbits then play their final home contests of the year with a three-game set against league foe Western Illinois. The opener is slated for Friday at 3 p.m., followed by 1 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday.

Omaha dropped to 14-28 (9-12).

Sunday

 SDSU 8, UNO 6

The Jackrabbits put up four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the victory.

Josh Falk, who went 2-for-4, got the rally going with a one-out single. Gus Steiger walked and Philip Jacobson singled to load the bases.

Landon Badger came through with a run-scoring hit. Pinch-hitter Skyler Wenninger was hit by a pitch to force in Steiger and knot the score at 6-all.

Anthony Schneider’s two-run single proved to be the difference, putting SDSU on top 8-6.

Tony Kjolsing, who finished 3-for-3, followed with a walk; but a pop out and a strikeout helped the Mavericks avoid further damage.

Omaha’s Ben Palensky singled with two outs in the top of the ninth, before SDSU closer Alex Marro got Tyler Daugherty to ground out to shortstop to end the game.

Marro (2-1) picked up his second win of the series after giving up just one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work.

UNO’s Grant Suponchick went 3-for-4 and Thomas DeBonville was 3-for-5 with a triple. Keil Krumwiede added a 2-for-4 effort as the Mavericks held an 12-11 advantage in hits. They left 11 runners on base.

Suponchick led off the fifth with a hit, moved to second on Adam Rellihan’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Max Gamm’s two-out single.

UNO added a pair of runs in the sixth.

Adam Caniglia’s one-out double chased SDSU starter Bryce Johnson. Braden Rogers then walked. Suponchick stepped up with an RBI single and Daugherty came through with a run-scoring hit with two away to make it 3-0.

The Jackrabbits quickly answered in the bottom of the inning.

Kjolsing got it going with a double and Newt Johnson drew a one-out base on balls. Falk’s two-run double to left-center field got SDSU on the board. After Steiger singled, Phil Velez reached on a fielder’s choice, which allowed Falk to score and tie the game at 3-3.

Ian Cote led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, advanced on Schneider’s sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Kjolsing’s sacrifice fly.

The Mavericks regained the lead in the top of the eighth.

Suponchick singled. Pinch-runner Hunter Hughes moved to second on Ben Palensky’s sacrifice, before taking third on a wild pitch.

After Daugherty walked, Gamm hit into a fielder’s choice as Hughes was able to scamper home and knot the score at 4.

DeBonville had an RBI single and Krumwiede added one of his own with two gone to put UNO ahead 6-4.

Johnson gave up two runs on six hits with three walks in 5 1/3 innings.

UNO starter Andrew Brighton allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in 5 1/3 innings. Jake Pennington, the third of five Maverick pitchers, took the loss after surrendering four runs on three hits and a walk in a third of an inning.

The Jackrabbits opened up an 13-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning before the game was suspended Saturday afternoon due to the weather, and then quickly finished things off Sunday afternoon with one more score to complete the run-rule shortened victory.

SDSU belted four home runs.

Josh Falk finished 3-for-4 with a homer and a double. Gus Steiger also went 3-for-4, adding a two-bagger.

Tony Kjelsing, Nick Smith and Newt Johnson also left the yard. 

Steiger opened the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.

Smith hit a three-run shot to right field in the third to push the margin to 4-0.

The Mavericks’ Braden Rogers stroked a run-scoring hit in the top of the fourth to get UNO on the board.

The Jackrabbits took control in the bottom of the inning.

Kjolsing drove a 1-0 pitch up the left-field line for a three-run homer.

Falk added a two-run round-tripper to center.

Landon Badger tacked on an RBI single up the middle to make it 10-1.

UNO’s Max Gamm drove in a run with a single in the fifth.

In the sixth, Henry Wittren drew a base-loaded walk to force in Keil Krumwiede and Gamm plated Tyler Daugherty with a sacrifice fly to cut the margin to 10-4.

SDSU’s Derek Hackman had a run-scoring hit in the sixth.

Johnson’s two-run shot made it 13-4 with none out in the bottom of the seventh, when play was suspended at 3:36 p.m.

Play resumed Sunday at noon and Steiger doubled with one away. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball to seal the deal.

Kjolsing and Smith both totaled a pair of hits.

The Jackrabbits totaled six extra-base hits and held a 13-5 advantage in the hit column.

Jackrabbit starter Brady Moxham gave up two runs on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Brett Mogen (1-1) pitched the next two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on a hit and two walks, to earn the win.

Three Jackrabbit relievers – Mitchell Oehme, Bret Barnett (two-thirds) and Tyler Olmstead (one) combined for 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, surrendering one hit, after that.

The Mavericks’ Spencer Koelewyn (3-5) was the losing pitcher after giving up four runs on four hits and four walks with three Ks in three innings of action.
