Jackrabbits topple Colonials in OT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The South Dakota State women’s basketball came away with a 97-88 overtime win at George Washington in a nonconference game Sunday.

The Jackrabbits outscored the Colonials 18-9 in overtime, shot 60 percent from the field and got a pair of 3-pointers from Alexis Alexander to put the game away.

Leading 85-83, the point guard sank her first long range shot in OT with 2:52 left. The Colonials responded with a 3-pointer of their own to keep it a two-point game. Alexander then knocked down her second with 2:06 remaining to give State the 91-86 lead.

Madison Guebert and Ellie Thompson sank six free throws in the final 1:07 to move South Dakota State to 2-0 on the season and drop George Washington to 0-2.

 Macy Miller led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field with three 3s. She also had a team-best six rebounds and seven assists.

Alexander tallied a career-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and a personal-best three long range baskets. Guebert finished with 16 points and three assists. Tylee Irwin came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points, sinking four 3-pointers in the first half.

Thompson scored her 1,000th career point early in the game and finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Jackrabbits shot 52.4 percent from the field, 81 percent from the free-throw line and 51.9 percent from 3-point range, sinking 14 3-pointers.

For the Colonials, Kelli Prange had 18 points and nine rebounds. Reserve Taylor Campbell scored 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Mei-Lyn Bautista totaled 14 points and 11 assists. Brianna Cummings contributed 12 points and Neila Luma 11.

South Dakota State plays host to North Dakota on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
