Jackrabbits win men's basketball opener

Sean Welsh/Register: South Dakota State’s Douglas Wilson is fouled as he goes up for a shot during the first half of the Jackrabbits’ 70-57 defeat of UT Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday night at Frost Arena.

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State kicked off the 2019-20 season and Eric Henderson era with a victory Tuesday night. The Jacks topped the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros 70-57 at Frost Arena.

The Jacks opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 10-point lead. They never looked back as the smallest the lead would get would be six the rest of the way.

“I’m really proud of our guys for sticking with the plan. We knew it was going to be really important to take care of the basketball, rebound. I thought in both of those categories we did a really good job. It was certainly good to be back in front of our loyal fans and Frost Arena. It’s a basketball season and we are excited,” Henderson said.

SDSU out-rebounded Rio Grande Valley 50-39 and had 12 turnovers on the night. The Jacks shot 45.8% from the field and went 4-for-17 from three.
