Jacks come up short against No. 4 Bears

LAS VEGAS – The South Dakota State women’s basketball team had No. 4 Baylor on the ropes Friday night, but the Lady Bears closed the game with four consecutive free throws to record a 72-66 nonleague win in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout at South Point Arena.

The Jackrabbits, now 3-2, were led by Madison Guebert’s 22 points. She connected on six of nine 3-pointers and was 8 of 13 from the field. Macy Miller had 14 points and a season-best six assists. Myah Selland added 12 points, a team-high six rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Baylor, 5-0, was led by Lauren Cox with 28 points and 10 rebounds and Kalani Brown’s 13 points and 10 rebounds.

South Dakota State had three leads in the first quarter, the last when Tagyn Larson sank a 3-pointer to cap a 9-0 run and take a 12-10 lead with 5:40 to play. Baylor answered by closing the quarter with 11 consecutive points for the 21-12 lead.

The Lady Bears opened the second quarter with a jumper by DiDi Richards before the Jackrabbits used a 14-4 run to pull within one, 27-26, on a Guebert 3-pointer. A Rylie Cascio Jensen 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock with 14 seconds remaining in the half cut Baylor’s led to three points, 37-34.

A Guebert 3-pointer to open the third quarter tied the game at 37 and Miller put the Jacks up 41-38 on a jumper at 6:40. Baylor took a 47-43 lead into the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run.

In the fourth quarter, a Guebert 3-pointer tied the game for the fifth time at 49. The Lady Bears then pushed their lead to seven points, 56-49, with 6:38 to play. After the teams traded baskets, Selland sank a 3-pointer and Guebert converted on a layup to pull within two, 58-56, with 5:11 to go.

A 10-2 run by BU put it up 68-58 with 1:12 remaining. An 8-0 run by the Jackrabbits again cut the lead to two, 68-66, with 20 seconds to go, but Baylor sank four consecutive free throws for the win.

Notes: Miller became just the third Jackrabbit to score more than 1,800 points. She now has 1,819 career points. ... Guebert moved into 14th in career scoring and now has 1,407 career points.
