Jacks in the National Football League: Week 10

Posted

Part of a weekly update, following the four active Jackrabbits in the National Football League.

Dallas Goedert (Philadelphia Eagles)

SDSU: 2014-17

Weekly Notes: Goedert played in 17 offensive snaps and 12 special teams plays during the team’s first game back from a bye vs. the Dallas Cowboys, a 27-20 loss.

The SDSU alum did not have a target from QB Carson Wentz’s 44 pass attempts, but did record a special teams tackle on a punt in the first quarter, holding the 39-yard punt at Dallas’ 16-yard line for no gain on the return.

Up Next: At New Orleans Saints (Sunday at 3:25 p.m.)

Adam Vinatieri (Indianapolis Colts)

SDSU: 1991-94

Weekly Notes: Vinatieri went three-for-three on extra-point attempts in the 29-26 win over the divisional rival Jacksonville Jaguars after a bye week.

The Colts scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions – all in the first half – with Vinatieri kicking the point-after on three of them and going for two on the last touchdown to increase the lead from 15 to 16 points.

That is all the points Indy managed to score, which was just enough as the Jaguars scored 26 points, making it a three-point game, before Vinatieri’s 52-yard kick missed wide right with 2:53 left in the game. Jacksonville took the ball from their own 42-yard line to Indianapolis’ 23-yard line before replay officials called a fumble that one of the Colts’ defenders recovered to seal the victory.

Next in the NFL record book for the Jackrabbit:

Games Played: currently 346 career games - 4th all-time; Extra-Points Attempted: currently 849 - 3rd all-time; Extra-Points Made: currently 832 - 3rd all-time; Field Goals Attempted: currently 680 - 2nd all-time

Up Next: vs. Tennessee Titans (Sunday at Noon)

Bryan Witzmann (Chicago Bears)

SDSU: 2010-13

Weekly Notes: Witzmann got his first regular-season start in 2018 for the Bears, playing all 57 offensive snaps and six special teams plays in the 34-22 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon.

He helped the Bears’ offense have scoring opportunities on seven of their 10 offensive drives, scoring touchdowns on five of them and missing field goal attempts in the other two. Their first four offensive possessions in the half went for touchdowns on drives of 75, 91, 71 and 18 yards. The Chicago offense did not have a turnover and didn’t punt until late in the third quarter.

Witzmann and the home team had 20 first downs with 402 yards of offense (7.6 yards per play), including 54 on the ground and 348 through the air.

As of Tuesday, the SDSU alum remains as the back-up left and right guard on the depth chart for the Bears, despite receiving the start over LG Eric Kush last weekend.

Up Next: vs. Minnesota Vikings (Sunday at 7:20 p.m.)

Zach Zenner (Detriot Lions)

SDSU: 2011-14

Weekly Notes: Zach Zenner played in two offensive snaps and 70 percent of the special teams plays (19) in the 34-22 loss in Chicago against the Bears.

It was his first game since being waived on Sept. 12 and re-signed on Nov. 6.

Zenner had one rush for 12 yards and one tackle on special teams. In the third quarter, down 26-10 after scoring a field goal, Zenner raced down the field on the kickoff to tackle Chicago’s return man at their own 19-yard line to stop a 14-yard gain. His carry was the last play of the game where he ran out the last two ticks on the clock with a 12-yard scamper off the left guard.

Up Next: vs. Carolina Panthers (Sunday at Noon)
