Jacks soccer team blanks Phoenix in opening exhibition

BLAINE, Minn. - South Dakota State took control early and never wavered as the Jackrabbit soccer team defeated Green Bay, 4-0, in an exhibition matchup at the National Soccer Center on Wednesday.
SDSU scored three goals in the opening 20 minutes of play. Lauren Ecklerle found the back of the net in the ninth minute with assists being credited to Cece Limongi and Karlee Manding. A penalty kick opportunity in the 14th minute was converted on by Manding to put the Jacks up 2-0. The scoring continued in the 18th minute as Manding again put one past the keeper thanks to contributions from Maya Hansen and Laney Murdzek.
The two sides went scoreless for 60 minutes but the Jacks scored on a goal courtesy of Kayla Anderson, with an assist from Sophia Hoffman, late in the second half to make it a 4-0 contest.
SDSU had a strong effort defensively and held a majority of the possession. The Jacks outshot the Phoenix 16-2 and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday. SDSU will face Augustana on the Vikings’ home field starting at 5 p.m.
