BEAUMONT, Texas – South Dakota State beat Louisiana-Monroe 3-2 and was swept by host Lamar on the opening day of the Katrinka Crawford Invitational on Friday.
“Not our best outing across the day with a lot of highs and lows, but we continue to fight, learn how to adjust and play at a more consistent level,” said SDSU coach Nicole Cirillo.
The Jackrabbits (2-3) close out the event facing Prairie View A&M today at 10 a.m.

The Jackrabbits defeated the Warhawks by the set scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-16, 18-25 and 16-14.
Ashlynn Smith posted 15 kills, three service aces and a block in the win. Makenzie Hennen contributed 15 kills, two aces, 1 1/2 blocks and 15 digs. Anna Nerad tallied six kills, five aces and four blocks (one solo). Crystal Burk chipped in with six kills.
SDSU totaled 15 aces, also getting three from Tatum Pickar and two by Maddie Fay.
Fay (20) and Carly Wedel (15) combined for 35 set assists. Burk came up with nine digs, Pickar eight and Drew McDougall seven.
ULM’s Kathryn Raschilla had 12 kills and a block. Ina Gosen tallied four kills, 3 1/2 blocks (one solo) and a pair of aces. Cali Assaley notched seven kills and 1 1/2 blocks. Mckinley Thiede (22) and Darby Fisher (10) combined for 32 set assists, while Albany Schaffer came up with 11 digs.

The Cardinals won 25-14, 31-29, 25-19.
Abigale Nash had 15 kills, two aces, 1 1/2 blocks (one solo) and 14 digs for Lamar. Malaysia Murdock added 12 kills and 2 1/2 blocks (one solo). Dannisha House contributed nine kills and a pair of aces.
Annika Slovak dished out 37 set assists. Erin Pequeno came up with 12 digs.
For the Jackrabbits, Burk totaled eight kills, two aces, a block assist and seven digs. Hennen added nine kills, a block assist and 12 digs. Nerad finished with five kills and 3 1/2 blocks (two solo). Smith recorded seven kills.
Fay (24) and Pickar (seven) combined for 31 set assists. Pickar added 15 digs, McDougall eight and Burk seven.
