Jacks split with Leathernecks at home

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State and Western Illinois split a Summit League softball doubleheader on a windy Monday afternoon at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.

The home team won Game 1 by a 7-2 margin and the Leathernecks prevailed 5-3 in Game 2.

WIU took the three-game series, winning the opener 7-2 Sunday in Sioux Falls on the strength of a five-run seventh inning.

Jackrabbit senior Ali Herdliska hit a pair of home runs in Game 1 Monday – her fifth career multi-HR contest – to push her school career-record total to 42. She has 10 this season.

Western Illinois is now 10-18 (3-6).

SDSU (25-10, 4-2) is scheduled to play at Minnesota on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before heading to Fargo to take on North Dakota State in a doubleheader at noon Saturday followed by a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.

Game 1

Kendra Conard pitched a complete game and Herdliska hit two of the Jackrabbits’ three home runs.

Conard (9-1) scattered six hits while giving up one earned run. She struck out a career-high nine batters and walked one.

Mallory McQuistan finished 3-of-4 with a long ball.

Herdliska, Yanney Ponce, who drove in a run, and Megan Rushing were each 2-of-3. Baily Janssen totaled two RBIs.

McQuistan and Rushing led off the bottom of the second with consecutive singles. Ponce got SDSU on the scoreboard with a one-out hit.

Rushing scored on a wild pitch and Ponce came home on Janssen’s sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Herdliska liked the first pitch she saw with two outs in the third, driving the ball over the fence in right field.

Rushing reached on an error in the fourth and then advanced on another error. Ponce put runners on the corners with a one-out hit, before Janssen came through with an RBI single to push the margin to 5-0.

Herdliska (right-center) and McQuistan (right field) homered on back-to-back pitches to open the fifth as the Jackrabbits’ advantage reached 7-0.

The Leathernecks’ Halle Hollatz, who finished 2-of-4, had an RBI single in the sixth. Jasmine Lara recorded a two-out double in the seventh and took advantage of a pair of SDSU errors to score.

Hailey Duwa finished 2-of-3.

Abby Carlin (1-8) took the loss after giving up five runs – four earned – on six hits with four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

Game 2

Emily Ira pitched a complete game and recorded a three-run double as the Leathernecks picked up the victory.

Ira (7-6) allowed three runs – two earned – on six hits with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks. She was 2-of-3 at the plate.

Herdliska finished 2-of-2 for SDSU.

Julia Andersen homered in the opening frame to put the hosts ahead 1-0.

WIU put up a 4-spot in the third.

Lara walked and Payton Abbott singled to put runners on the corners. Sydney Hollings reached on a fielder’s choice – no outs were recorded on the play – as Lara scampered home. Aly Compton drew a base on balls with two away.

Ira stepped up next and stroked a three-run double to right-center field, putting the visitors ahead 4-1.

Ponce doubled with two away in the bottom of the fourth and scored on Janssen’s hit soon thereafter.

WIU put together a two-out rally of its own in the sixth, as Sidney Bottino, Alyssa Ealy and Lara tallied consecutive singles to make it 5-2.

SDSU’s Kerrigan Torres and Andersen reached on errors in the seventh.

Herdliska stepped into the batter’s box with one out and plated Torres with a sacrifice fly, providing for the final margin.

Olivia Douglas (2-2) took the loss in the circle after allowing four runs on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts in three innings.

Morgan DeMarais gave up one run on three hits with one K over the final four frames.
